I am a bit of a purist and so when our drummer recommended that I give the TC-Helicon VoiceTone Correct a shot, I was insulted to say the least. I did try the Correct and, well, my tune has changed. I love this pedal! I was advised to turn all the knobs to the twelve o' clock position, plug it in and leave it alone. I did this and for the duration of a two-hour set was more pleased with my sound than I have ever been. Now, I have to admit that previous to this I was running directly through the house mixer and so almost anything would have been an improvement. However, I have used rack mounted compressors and de-essers in the past which were not only a pain to set up but, without a professional sound tech, did not come close to putting out the sound produced by the Correct. In other words, I pulled it out of the box and it immediately worked as described.
One disclaimer is that someone does need to be able to sing for this product to work. I would compare its functionality to that of a guitar tuner in that when one strums an E and it's sharp, the tuner indicates how sharp it is by, perhaps, the frequency of a flashing E indicator allowing the guitarist to correct until the indicator stops flashing. Well, the Correct does the correcting on the fly. However, if a singer is trying to hit an E but is actually belting out something that could only be described as an H sharp, the pedal can't offer much help. In other words, its function is that of mild pitch correction and not that of magic.
The beauty of this product is that it really only needs one disclaimer. While the pitch correct is unlike anything I have ever experienced, the included compressor and de-esser makes it very worth its cost. If you are a singer or perform with a singer who sings directly through a mixer/preamp, you should at least try it out. To quell any concerns, I like to throw as much twang into my sound as I can, almost yodeling at times, and this pedal keeps up without negating or disrupting the sound I'm trying to achieve. Because of this I truly feel like it has left the singing to me and led me to believe that it is much less like cheating than I would have ever imagined. The Correct is the real deal and worth every penny to a live performer.
Since discovering the wonder of TC vocal pedals I have since utilized the Correct in collaboration with the TC-Helicon VoiceTone Create, Producer-in-a-box Including TC Reverb and Tap Delay, Detune/Thickening, Distortion and Megaphone, A/B Switching, another great pedal. I only mention this as I have discovered that it is best to run first through the Correct and then through the Create and ensure that, in this configuration, the input on the Correct remain at twelve while the input on subsequent pedals be reduced significantly. While the Correct is brilliant on its own, the Correct and Create are a terrific combination.
