Planet Waves Steel String NS Capo Review

This capos biggest strength, and it's only weakness, is that it has to be tightened each time you put it on. Get this capo if you're very aware of tuning issues that crop up when using one. With my old capo, which just clamps on at one tightness, my B string invariably gets too tight, bringing it noticeably sharp, even when I'm only capo-ing on the 2nd fret. With the NS, one can tighten it just enough to fret the strings without bringing them out of tune. I proved it to myself using a tuner. If you don't care about tuning to this extent, and you want ease of use, then you're probably better off with one of the other models. Since this is the only capo I know of that solves the tuning issue, and I found it in the process of trying to solve that problem, I give it five stars.

Planet Waves NS Capo, Silver Review

I use the classical model on my nylon gits. This version runs out of adjustment on the low frets on my Seagull Grade. Works, but I would like it to have a bit more range.

Planet Waves NS Dual Action Guitar Capo in Black Review

Planet Waves NS Dual Action Guitar Capo in Black

I've used a LOT of capos. They seem to fundamentally fall into two categories, each of which I define by their flaw. The first are capos that require two hands (or lots of time and finesse with one hand, if one-hand operation is even possible). The problem here is that I don't want to stand on stage (or even during practice by myself) messing with capos. The second group are capos that can be operated with one hand but press down WAY TOO HARD on the strings and make them go sharp. This isn't so bad if you're playing solo, but playing with a group, you'll be out of tune, and if you don't capo all the strings (I often leave the low E open), the open string(s) will be out of tune with the sharped, capo'd strings.
The Planet Waves Dual Action manages to solve both these problems. It's easy to squeeze and a real pleasure to use with one hand (much easier than the Dunlop or Kyser), and it doesn't press the strings down too hard. It's got a dial, in fact, that you can use to augment whatever amount of pressure you choose.
Perfection? Almost. It actually doesn't always press the strings down quite hard enough, even with the dial turned all the way up (though this is also still a problem even with the fanciest one-hand capos, like the G7th Performance Capo, which, frankly, I find is not so easy to operate with one hand). Frustrating, but it's an acceptable trade off.
It also has a rather sharp edge to it that can rub against your hand if you play in an unusual manner (as I do). I've filed it smooth, and now it's fine.
Still, it's about the best I've found in the capo world, and for that, and to balance out the ludicrous one-star rating below, I give it five stars.

The Planet Waves Dual-Action Capo. The product of an ongoing collaboration between famed product designer Ned Steinberger and D'Addario. The compound action reduces the force necessary to open and close the capo. It also eliminates side-pulling the strings out of tune, which is prevalent on other trigger-type capos. Aircraft-quality aluminum construction adds virtually no weight to the guitar's neck when in use and the capo can be clamped on the headstock when idle. Simply adjust the tactile micrometer tension control so there is just enough tension to eliminate string buzzing.

Planet Waves PW-CP-08 Dual Action Capo Tuner (Standard) Review

Good capo. I use primarily on Fender Tele's. I would have given it 4 or maybe 5 stars if it conformed a little better to the radius of the fretboard. That seems to be an issue I have with many of these "high end" capos. The adjustable tension does create an even pull. I typically don't use the built in tuner, as I am using this in live situations and don't have time to retune, however it's a nice feature. Someday maybe somebody will make capos designed for specific guitar necks, then my prayers will be answered!
