(More customer reviews)I generally use the Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE) to tune my heads, but this one is as good and has a feature I like more than the Rhythm Tech model - this tuning key clicks and disengages when the dialed-in torque is attained whereas the Rhythm Tech model requires you to reset a lever.
It is simple to use. All you do is hand tighten your lugs, set the dial on the key to an initial setting, then go around your drum in the standard opposing tightening pattern. Test, and increase the dial setting until you get the sound you want. Once you do achieve the sound I strongly recommend that you write the settings down so you can quickly dial in your preferred tuning the next time you tune your drums or change heads.
A few things to consider: tuning involves more than just the batter side heads, which is especially true in the case of snare drums. Unless you are seeking a flat sound, do not tune the resonant heads to the same torque as the batter side heads, else the heads will cancel each other out because they will be vibrating at the same frequency. Also, make sure your lugs are lightly oiled so that each has uniform resistance or the torque settings will be inaccurate. Finally, if you cannot get the sound you are looking for between setting increments (i.e., between dial setting #3 and #4), use a standard key and try one eigth turn increments.
Regardless of whether you play as a hobby or professionally, this key is an amazing tool that will allow you to quickly and easily change the dynamics of your drums.

Rhythm Tech RT 7350 ProTorq Drum Key Review

When it arrived the instructions were not clear, but I sat the dial to #2, loosened all of the lugs on my floor tom and went around my lugs using opposing lug patterns, and tested the first cut of tuning. Too loose and deep, so I increased the setting to #3 and repeated. Almost the sound I wanted, so I used a regular key and went an eighth turn using the same pattern. Perfect. I then started on the next largest tom, working back to the smallest. Using the #3 setting plus an eighth turn I got my toms 1/2 octave apart.
Next I worked on my snare drum, starting with the snare side, then the batter side. I used #4 on the batter side and #5 on the snare side, and managed to get the crisp, yet warm, sound I wanted. The bass drum came next - I set the batter side tension 1 notch below the resonant side and achieve a great tuning. From there I went back and set the resonant sides of each of my four toms one notch higher than the batter side and marveled at the perfect tuning I attained.
This is an easy device to use - with the lever facing you move it to the left, loosen all of your lugs, then tighten each starting with one or two. When the lever clicks and moves to the right position you have reached the torque setting. Test, increase a notch if necessary, and repeat until you get the sound you want. Set the resonant heads either one notch higher or lower to make sure the batter and resonant heads do not cancel each other (and to your desired sound), and you will have a perfectly tuned set.
I'll never go back to tuning by ear! You'll be amazed by the results if you tune with this key, and don't forget to write down your optimum settings.

(More customer reviews)If you've ever been frustrated with your drum tuning, the drum dial is for you! It seems like whenever you try to get solid advice on tuning your drums, you get told that "it depends on what YOU want them to sound like" or "drum tuning is an art, not a science". Well, with the drum dial, it IS a science so you can get your drums to sound exactly like you want them to, every time you tune. The drum dial measures the tension of the drumhead at each lug so by getting the tension near each lug at the same drum dial number, your drum is in tune with itself. It's the same thing you're trying to do with the old-fashioned tapping method but you're using your eyes on the dial, instead of your ears. Then, it's just a matter of deciding what tone you like. Personally, I like the tone of my drums using the settings recommended in the drum dial instructions. Some people might like their drums set higher or lower. It doesn't matter because once you get the desired tone, you just write down the drum dial numbers for that drum and you can always get it back to that tone easily. Some purists will say you should just learn to tune the "right way" which is the old-fashioned way. Well, my buddy tunes his electric guitar with an electronic tuner, so why shouldn't I use technology, too? Again, if you've ever struggled to make your drums "sound right" or been frustrated by the whole drum tuning experience, get the drum dial. I'll never be without one again.
