Knilling School Model 4/4 Violin Outfit (Perfection Pegs, Shaped Cover, Wood Bow) Review

We received this violin and were not pleased. There appeared to be a sloppy glue job on the neck, touched up paint on the chin rest, and a crack by the F hole. We returned this violin for a refund, so we cannot say how it played.

Cecilio CVN-200 4/4 Full Size Rosewood Violin Review

This will be a moderately comprehensive review of Cecilio CVN-200 violin
First of all my knowledge of violins is limited but I'm learning everyday. I do have a music background playing trumpet in school and piano at home with some compositions on the side. I've always wanted to learn violin and finally decided to try. 100 bucks for a violin, does it even work?
I received this instrument four weeks ago and am extremely happy with it.
The outfit for this is great for the price. You get everything you need to start playing and more, ie. TWO bows, TWO sets of strings, an extra bridge, a case, a shoulder rest, a simple tuner, and a cake of rosin.
All of these are essential for playing the violin and you get them all. Also, the bow and strings are very delicate parts so having two in case one breaks is a huge plus for a newbie. The violin itself also comes with four micro tuners (at the bottom end of the strings) rather than just one on the e string that even some 500 dollar outfits are lacking. This is an excellent value for this price.
Now, none of this stuff is of the highest quality, far from it. The bows were slightly twisted, the rosin is barely usable (but is), the bridge is asymmetrical (by design not defect), the case pocket zipper sometimes fails, the pegs do slip, and the micro-tuner hooks need readjusting. However, all of this, though unthinkable for an intermediate player and up, are more than manageable for a beginning player.
So how does it sound? Well, the last violin i touched was over ten years ago and I have no others to compare with. Having said that, it plays quite well, at least it produces a sound akin to other violins I've heard. My understanding is that violins at this price are normally considered junk and unplayable. This one has quite a DECENT SOUND. Some of the other reviewers mentioned that even his/her teacher was impressed with its sound.
In fact, it plays well enough that I absolutely positively love practicing on this violin. Since receiving this little thing I have not missed a single day of practice and on average spend one and a half to two hours each day on it! Something I never thought I would do.
Having said all of that, the one thing holding this back are the included strings. The strings take precision bowing to respond at its full potential (which isn't high).
As a beginner, one tends to bow wobbly and bouncy-like which causes the bow to slide up and down the strings. The strings respond by losing resonance and whistling or shrieking. Cleaning the strings of rosin helps, and so does re-rosining the bow. As I said all the shortcomings of the product are manageable. However, once I got better at bowing I realized the strings were holding me back which is a good thing rather than replacing the entire violin.
I just recently put in an order for a set of Thomastik Dominant strings (35 USD). I read that even with a 300 dollar student violin, you should replace the included strings with much better ones (usually Dominant set is recommended). I consider this upgrading the violin to meet my own growth as a violin student rather than a shortcoming of the original purchase.
Again, I absolutely love playing on this violin. For such a small investment you get so much, everything you need to learn and develop your skill... until you outgrow it.
I am already looking at intermediate violins between $750-1100 since I now know I want to stick with it.
This violin is perfect for someone who wants to try out the violin but not yet committed, at least not enough to spend $300-500 on a typical student violin.
Considering price, 5 STARS for an excellent violin.

I bought this because it was the cheapest I could find. I've never played violin before so I wasn't sure if it was going to be something that I would stay interested in. That way it wouldn't be a big waste of money if I decided I didn't want it anymore.
If you are a biginner or a young kid I would recommend this as a starter. It's cheap so you get what you pay for but it works. I've had no problems with it. If you are somewhat decent at playing I'd go with a better, higher quality violin though.

My son began taking violin lessons to prepare him for his school music course in the fall. This violin is beautiful, tuned well and played beautifully. It was such a hit, my daughter insists on learning and now I'm buying a second violin for her lesson! In the event my kids change their instrument in a few years, I think this was money well spent!!

I decided to learn how to play the violin, so I went searching for one that was decent for beginners and not very expensive. When I saw a photo of this silver violin, I fell in love with it and immediately purchased it. Well, the pros are that this violin come with pretty much everything you'd need as a beginner. You get a case, tuner (BONUS!), the bow and rosin. I went out and bought my own violin mute so that I could practice without annoying those around me. The con is that you can clearly tell that the violin was spray painted because there is a part on the back of the violin that is unpainted, but it isn't very noticeable. Overall, I would recommend Music Basics instruments and this particular violin to others.

I have never been so mad or disappointed in a purchase as I am with this.
This violin could not be tuned. The tail piece and fine tuners were flimsy and in my attempts to try and tune the strings - broke one. It was hard to get the bows out because the hairs kept snagging on the holders. The instructions on placement of hands, etc are seriously lacking. Luckily I had done my own research prior to the purchase so I was a bit more prepared than someone who may have expected certain instructions to be present with this purchase. Whether it was the bow or rosin, one or the other is just crap. I kept rosining the bow and barely got any sound out of the violin.
For those looking to learn the violin - DO NOT BUY THIS. In fact, anyone looking for a violin - just don't. I am so disappointed with this purchase that I don't ever plan to buy a Cecilio product ever.

I bought this as my second violin as i left my original hand crafted violin back in India. I am certainly not a beginner, as i have been playing a violin from almost 10 years, and definitely not a pro as i don't give concerts. I can distinguish between good and bad instruments. After playing this violin for a few minutes, i felt the tone is a bit harsh, but it will improve with time. The package as a whole is a good one with two bows, an extra set of strings, an extra bridge, a tuner, though i would have preferred a roomier professional case and a attachable pickup at a slightly extra price, but not many students would need them. Definitely value for money package for a student.
I would also recommend a brass/rubber mute along with the violin.

I am a music major at Indiana State University who plays upright bass in orchestra, and was looking to expand my music knowledge to violin. To my surprise my parents picked this up for me. I attempted to tune it and the high e string broke. Not surprising. As a rule, ALWAYS put new string on an instrument right away. The strings it came with were old and low quality. Also be sure to clean the instrument. I was disturbed by the amount of filth that came off the finger board. When i was done with setting it up and such, the instrument i was left with was astounding. The sound and depth is very nice, and the finish is stunning. I'm very happy with it. The case is nice, but it did need to be cleaned. the bows are passable, the rosin..... buy new rosin.
