(More customer reviews)Having always wanted to play a banjo and convinced by a recent birthday that life is short; I took a leap of faith and purchased a rather expensive banjo. Knowing the pressure was on to make some quick progress in order to justify the expense to my wife, I purchased several banjo instructional books. By far the most useful has been this Earl Scruggs book with CD. The text walks you very slowly and methodically through an increasingly difficult progression of skills and the audio is indispensible, providing the nuance of Scruggs' sound that I wouldn't have been able to pick up on from the printed tab alone. The audio is in Scruggs's own voice from an LP record from many years back which adds a lot of nostalgia to the practice sessions. With this book and CD learning the banjo has been as fun as I thought it would be. If I was relying on the other books I purchased I am afraid I would be very frustrated at this point. If you are an aspiring banjo picker I highly recommend this book and CD. I am convinced that anyone who invests the time and takes each lesson slowly can become an accomplished banjo picker with this book and CD. $30 is a small investment for the musical skills you will develop.

Saga Appalachian Full Size Five String Resonator Banjo Review

(More customer reviews)when i received the banjo i was immediately worried, i knew it was one of the last two in stock so the chances of a problem were high. i was right. there was a deep gash in the inner box the width of the box. when i pulled the banjo out of that box it had a dent in the head, about the size of a dime. it came with no instructions on how to set up the bridge(i'm a first-timer and it would have been nice to learn from Saga instead of Banjohangout.org, the DVD shows you how to start tuning and playing but not setup) after i figured that out and started tuning a chip of plastic fell off of the fake mother-of-pearl fifth string tuner. even before i added superglue it was still functional and it sounds fine in spite of the dented head so i didn't bother sending it back. all in all its not a bad instrument and i like playing it having come from a guitar background but somewhere between chinese workmanship and shoddy transport of what should have been labeled fragile it became a not so great instrument. just the same for a little handywork(if you're good with handtools the head is an easy fix) it can easily be a decent one. its a good buy for a firstimer for the price. i'm not as sure that i'd buy another instrument from these folks though, especially since the DVD covers every other instrument in the Saga Appalachian line. so buyer should definitely beware.

Shubb BC-25 5th String Banjo Capo in Nickel Review

(More customer reviews)I really enjoy these capos. I never did like the railroad spike system as it always seemed to sharpen up. With the sliding capo you can put just enough presure to change the note without making it sharp. Of all the 5th string capos out there (and there are not that many) I like the shubb best. On top of that it is made right here in USA and not a Chinese knock off.

(More customer reviews)I use this for my banjo. It gets all the hooks evenly tightened making the banjo sound alot better. Trying to tap tune a banjo head is an exercise in futility. I know there are some people who swear by it but I gave up and could never figure it out. This makes it very easy to get a great sounded banjo.

You can listen to any string's tone as often as you want, and when you are satisfied, you can move on to the next string's tone at any time. Also, the duration of the tone is up to you. I use it by turning on and listening to a tone, then turning it off after I've gotten an auditory "fix" on it. Then I pluck and tune the corresponding banjo string. I repeat this process as often as I need to, then with the press of a button, I move on to the tone for the next string. This product is handy-dandy, and I'm quite happy to have purchased it.

Zoid Z-1000 Clip-On Tuner by Sabine Review

(More customer reviews)The Sabine Zoid is much easier to read and use than my Intelli clip-on tuner was (that one only lasted four month before having a seizure). The Zoid's LCD meter is more stable and I like the red-to-green indicator. Very quick tuning... it picks up on open strings instantly; no need for 12th fret harmonics as with the Intelli. The mic option is a great feature; I can leave the Zoid clipped to my music stand, unless I need to take it along somewhere, and it works just as well with the mic as when clipped on. I was afraid it would be too big, but its no more obstrusive than the Intelli. There's no sympathetic buzzing like the Intelli did either. Its been going on the original battery for well over a year too.
The seller, Musical Instrument Haven, mailed it immediately. I ordered on Thursday and had it on Monday...and no shipping charge! Great!

Intelli IMT-900 Chromatic Clip-on Tuner w/ Tranposing Review

(More customer reviews)The IMT-900 is a good performer. It is definitely superior to the Korg AT-2, which it replaces. My old Korg AT-2 was still functional but suffered from all of the obvious drawbacks. It was heavy, bulky, slow, and subject to ambient noise. The IMT-900 is light, small, more easily read, much faster, and immune to off-instrument influence. True, the low E on my guitar is a slower read than the other five strings but proper positioning of the tuner makes it easy. One reviewer complained that his IMT-500 was badly scratched when it arrived. Most likely, he failed to read the notice about removing the protective covering from the instrument. The covering is soft and scratches with a fingernail! Underneath is a crystal hard, sparkling clear, polycarbonate plate that looks great. Another reviewer complained that his IMT-500 finally worked after the third new battery. I tested the battery that came with my IMT-900 and it read 3.22 volts. Obviously a fresh lithium cell. Perhaps the reviewer was unfamiliar with CR-2032 installion and finally got it right.
Anyway, I opted for the IMT-900 over the IMT-500 even though it was $2.00 more expensive. The IMT-900 is described as an improvement over the IMT-500, comes postage paid for $17.99 from this excellent Amazon.com vendor and, unless someone accidentally steps on it, I expect it to last many decades (or a dozen battery changes -- whichever comes first). Altogether, this is an excellent buy and almost a quantum leap from my Korg of the "bad old days."
