(More customer reviews)I have an old Harmony acoustic I have been trying to refurnish over the last year. I wasn't looking to spend too much time or cash on it (it has been used and abused), but it still produces a beautiful tone. I was however having a problem with my 1st and 3rd strings staying tuned. My guitar still had the original tuning machines oon it, and they were very worn.
That being said, these were a perfect fit for what I needed. They seem to be of decent quality, and have been holding tuning well, even under stress of a capo. The bushings that came with them are cheap, so I used the bushings that were already in the headstock and that worked out just fine.
If you are looking to get your old guitar playable again, these seem to be the way to go. Definitly not the most beautiful set, or the MOST sturdy, but they do the job.

Planet Waves Chromatic Headstock Tuner Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this tuner 5 months ago and I love (loved) it. It's a great tuner and works well in noisy environments. But it is very fragile. It clips on to the guitar like a clothes pin and eventually an accident will happen and it will fly off the guitar. This occurred for me yesterday. It fell off onto an oriental rug on the floor. Since that moment it has stopped working - it turns on for only a few seconds and then shuts itself off. I would like to think this was bad luck on my part, but this also happened to a friend of mine about a month ago - is that a coincidence? You will have to decide. If something similar has occurred for other readers, I encourage you to write a review or add comments to this one - bringing attention to a marginal design, if this is the case, is very valuable.
*** UPDATE: I received a comment from Planet Waves / D'Addario regarding my problem when they saw my review. As a result, I returned the tuner for warranty replacement (despite being two months out of warranty). Customer service from Planet Waves / D'Addario has been outstanding and as I stated above, I do love the tuner. Replacement was swift with absolutely no hassles. What more can you ask for. Really excellent customer service !!!

Tascam PT-7 Chromatic Tuner/Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered this on the basis of positive reviews in the music press and websites, sadly, I'll be returning it.
All the things it does, it does well, with reasonable controls, a good size display, nice backlighting etc .Build quality was good, display and controls were intuitive enough.
However...
Neither the tech specs, nor any of the reviews I found mentioned that this 'recorder' has no monitoring capability. The fact that there is no record monitoring to speaker or headset makes it useless to me; I can't find any way to enable monitoring. I rather suspect that Tascam left out monitoring on purpose, so this would not compete with their vocal trainers, which cost twice what this does and generally have fewer features.
It's a real shame, the unit is quite nice, but even the cheesiest digital recorders all have a headset monitor feature, Tascam/Teac knows better.

Dunlop Standard Tortex Picks, 12 Pack, Green, .88mm Review

(More customer reviews)I've been playing guitar for 22 years now. For at least 20 of those years, I've been using Tortex picks, and I will never stop using them as long as I live.
I tried all of the thicknesses over the course of a few months. When I started, I was playing Ramones style punk; strumming barre chords all day like they were going out of style. It seemed to make sense at the time to use the thinner picks, the .5mm or .6mm. (I think these were the red and the orange ones...) They were totally flexible. The red one barely registered at all, it might as well have been a little piece of tissue paper. But at the time it made sense to my dumbass 16 year old neophyte self.
A little later, I discovered the joys of speed metal. I began picking and peddaling on individual strings rather than just strumming chords. This was when I started experimenting with the thicker picks. .88mm, 1.0, 1.14. These would be the green, purple, and blue ones. Eventually I settled on the green .88mm and I've been using them ever since. I can't even imagine using a different pick anymore.
The reason that I fell in love with these picks is that their edges aren't rounded like standard "Fender" style plastic or tortoise shell picks. The edge of a Tortex is cut at right angles, they have corners. When you peddal on a wound string, you get an amazingly crisp and sharp scraping timbre that just can't be achieved with standard rounded off picks. The catch is that of course the cornered edge wears down rather quickly as you play. You will only get this awesome sound for a few minutes. A professional performer would want to switch to a fresh pick at the beginning of each song. A bedroom virtuoso will get more use out of them.
