Fender Starcaster Strat Pack Electric Guitar with Amp and Accessories - Black Review

Fender Starcaster Strat Pack Electric Guitar with Amp and Accessories - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a starter electric after having learned on an acoustic. It's great for the price. The guitar: -After a few days I could tell the tremolo bar wasn't going to last very long so I completely unscrewed it and do not use it. So don't plan on using that heavily for very long, it's not made in a fashion to last. That's one of the ways the price is kept down on the guitar, I'm sure. The pickups and bridge definitely will need adjustment so find a good place online to learn about that, or hopefully you know someone who knows guitars or you know them yourself. After a few months one of the wires to the jack broke off, somehow, and I did have to solder that back on. I couldn't say how common of a problem that might be. It's recommendable that you keep the jack input nut tight to the guitar and don't let it get to where the jack can spin freely at all. Otherwise the tension will go to the wires connecting to the jack and that's probably what caused my problem, so lesson learned. If you can afford a higher quality strat and don't want any little hassles like that, then spend the extra bucks. But, if you're like me, and willing to put a tiny bit of work into keeping it working, the price to quality ratio is definitely in your favor. It's probably better for a first electric than something higher quality and more expensive anyways, because you're not so afraid to tinker around with it, take it apart and find out what makes it tick. I've had it for about 3 months now and have consistently been playing it at the very least 7 hours a week and still happy. The Amp: -It does its purpose. Not a very good amp, but it's solid, and doesn't have much to complain about. You know what you're getting there; A cheap little amp. The guitar strap: -Don't trust it. It will slip off the strap buttons; First day. Get some strap locks for it, or get a better strap. The tuner: -completely cheap and not even worth using. I put it up against a good/reliable tuner and it didn't even have the correct read on the pitch. I'm not sure what's going on there but I basically threw mine away. It looked like it was about to fall apart out of the package, basically. I recommend buying a different one straight away before the guitar even arrives, or tuning by ear is better. The four stars are based on the assumption that you're someone who is willing to get the screwdriver out once or twice and mess around with it. It's based on the fact that you're not needing the little things like the strap and tuner to be perfect out of the box. If that's for some reason important to you, then consider this a 2-star review. The four stars is also probably based on the fact that you either A: know some things about guitars already, B: know someone else who does, or C: are very resourceful and good at making something cheap work to its greatest ability. Hope this has been helpful.

Tascam DP-02 Digital Portastudio - 8 Track Review

Tascam DP-02 Digital Portastudio - 8 Track
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an outstanding system for demo recording and I am sure it would also be useful for live recordings with some added components.
After much research, I purchased the Tascam DP02 Portastudio instead of the Boss BR900CD. I had previously used the BR900 with much success and had my mind set on it for quiet some time. I kept my options open and the DP02 seemed to be the most comparable system. Despite some reviews stating the DP02 did not allow you to hear the effects while recording, I decided on it due to the on-board high, low, and reverb adjustment options. (I did not want to transfer to a computer for mastering) I was going to add an effects processor and pre-amp for the mic, but found all effects do play through recording.
The system has a lot of built in guitar (acoustic and electric), drum, bass, and vocal effects. It took me only a few hours to record several tracks, master them, and burn them to disk. Only being able to record to 2 tracks at once is a small drawback, but if you are doing all of your own recording shouldn't be a problem.
READ THE MANUAL!
Although it is not the easiest to follow page to page, if you know how to find what your looking for it's in the manual. For those of you that want to sit down, push record, and be on your way, you may want to look for a simpler system. Once you get it down, the DP02 is quite easy to use, but not something you can just turn on and go without some instruction. The trickiest part would would be mastering, but it is by no means difficult if you follow the directions.
All around this is a great system for a home studio and possibly more.
P.S. Thanks to Amazon for having the lowest price, and quick delivery.Just a quick update. May 29, 2010. I have put many hours onto this Portastudio and can say it has absolutely been worth it. The volume on the final track can be a little tricky, but nothing some time and patience cannot overcome. It has not given me any trouble and has never locked up as some people have said. Great piece of equipment for a very fair price.

Buyer beware!!! This company has no customer support. I had problems with registering it through iLoc and it wouldn't work. I tried to contact the company (which can only be done through email) they voided my reg code. I found a phone number in the yellow pages and they hung up on me when I told them their customer service was lacking. When I finally contacted the company by email they told me to go somewhere else and try another product. They never offered any help. If you buy this, you are on your own. Buyer beware!

I was amazed how quickly and safely it got to my home. I was a little nervous ordering a guitar over the internet for fear it would be damaged during shipping. The seller did a great job securely boxing it up and it got here without a scratch. I am impressed with the quality of the guitar overall, even though only an amateur I recognize quality when I see it.

After getting a guitar that came with Grovers stock, ages ago, I was on a mission to convert some of my guitar projects as well. I put these on a Dean with SD JB/Jazz set and they're pretty awesome. Very rarely goes out of tune (I don't have to tune before playing every time anymore). The string locking mechanism is ingenious, much better than their JB self locking type which I put on a tele. All their products are high quality and seem like they'll last forever. Lifetime guarantee is just a safety net, but they'll probably never fail on you.

Starcaster by Fender Electric Guitar/Amp Package - Sunburst Finish Review

Starcaster by Fender Electric Guitar/Amp Package - Sunburst Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this guitar pack and I have to say that the number of negative comments is amazing. I am not sure what people expect for $200.00. No! This is not a $1200.00 dollar American made strat, nor is the $500.00 Mexican made strat. It's a low cost made in China strat.
Regardless of where it was made, I found the workmanship to be very acceptable. The guitar is beautiful and the rosewood fretboard is very nice. The whole guitar has a solid feel. My only real complaint is that the center pickup has an unusually low level output. But there is no way I would return this guitar just because of a single pickup. At worst case I'd just have Fender send a replacement. And Yes! As other reviews have noted, the amp hums a little (especially at higher volumes). But, this has more to with the single coil pickups used in the guitar. If you want humbucker pickups, you're going to pay more. Also the amp is just a small 10W practice amp. It works fine for lower volume practicing. I have fallen in love with mine and play it quietly in the evenings to relax from the world.
I have a family and very little extra money. I am greatful that Fender has provided these low cost kits. It gives me the opportunity to own and relax with a Fender, something that would be questionable with a better (read more expensive) guitar. And, if the kids develop an interest, I won't cry too much if they add a few scratches to it.
Folks need to keep things in perspective. This is a low cost entry level guitar. Understanding those limitations, I highly recommend this kit to anyone just starting out.

Ernie Ball 6180 Junior Size Volume Pedal-Mono, 250K Review

Ernie Ball 6180 Junior Size Volume Pedal-Mono, 250K
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is probably the best volume pedal of its kind, meaning the kind which uses a pot (potentiometer) to adjust volume. Most volume pedals work this way. The problem is that the pots do wear down over time, leading to scratchy sound and uneven performance. It's an inevitability you're stuck with unless you're willing to shell out for an optical pedal (to be described later in this review).
It seems that some users don't realize that you can adjust the volume swell rates on these things. That's a nice feature. It's well built and doesn't seem to suck tone, which is very important to an acoustic musician such as myself. It does suck a little bit of volume.
In response to the other review: no, it's not for keyboards. Perhaps you were misled by a salesperson, but there are two versions of this pedal - one for passive instruments (model 6180, high-impedance 250k) and one for active instruments (model 6181, low impedance 25k). This page is for the passive model. A keyboard signal is a low-impedance signal and is not appropriate for this version of the pedal. A typical high-impedance signal would be a passive pickup in an acoustic guitar. The model you get depends on your instrument and where along the chain you put it. For example, if I put it between the guitar and preamp, then I should use the high-impedance model, but if I were putting it between the preamp and the amp, then the low-impedance model is the one.
All that said, the best volume pedals you can get are probably the George Dennis models. They use an optical system, there there's no pot to inevitably wear down. Also, they are impedance-switching, so one pedal will take care of you, no matter where you put it. They don't suck tone either. They'll run you about $130, but are well worth the money.

The potentiometer has a 250k ohm resistance suitable for the audio path of passive instruments. Behind the jack area under the footplate is a micro taper switch which provides the user two distinct volume swell rates. Overall Volume Pedal Junior dimensions: 3.5" W x 10" L x2 3/8" H . The main pivot shaft is of centerless ground 1/2' diameter stainless steel, precision seated though nylon bushings at both ends. Tough long lasting Kevlar cable transmits pedal travel to the controls and is attached by stainless steel springs.

Takamine G Series GS330S Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, Natural Review

I bought this guitar for my wife last Christmas. It's priced a little higher than the low-end guitars, but the sound and feel of it really justify the price.
I myself play the guitar and have some experience with the feel and sound of a guitar. This particular one is really smooth, easy on the fingers, and the sound is excellent. As far as tuning the guitar, it definitely tunes very well and very easily.
I highly recommend this guitar - the price may be a little steep, but if you see it on sale anywhere, go for it.

Morpheus DropTune Octave Guitar Effects Pedal Review

Morpheus DropTune Octave Guitar Effects Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will admit to not being the most proficient at playing guitar, but I like to "try" and sound like a song if I am learning it via tab or by ear. One thing that has always gotten me is the fact that I just am used to standard tuning or drop D tuning, being that those are the easiest. So what about the Morpheus? Well, I also own a Digitech Whammy Pedal, so I understand taking one string and knocking it down, but the Morpheus Droptune allows for all the strings (at once) to play.
What does all this mean?
Okay, say you like Black Sabbath, Slayer or Slipknot, they all tune down at some point in time, so how to do this, especially if you don't want to spend time re-tuning after you get bored trying to play someone else's sound? Well, as soon as you turn it on, it is a half step down, strum a chord, yep, it's a half step down..then hit the "down" button on the left...yep, down another half step, all the way to three and a half steps. Of course the metal guys drop D, then tune down, so go ahead, do that...you sound like your favorite band. Now the pedal is actually a "cheat"...should you learn to do your own tunings, of course you should. Should you, with a whammy bar, learn how to adjust your guitar? Yes you should...but after years and years of playing and not getting much fulfillment from my lack of "sounding" like the song that I am trying to play, this helped get me in tune right away.
Of course you still have to have a decent ear, make sure your original tuning is good, because I believe my salesperson a Woodwind and Brasswind said this creates polyphonic pitch drops, which looking down at my pedal right now, indeed it says that. Just imagine if something is out of tune without effect, generally from my experience, the sounds don't get better with effects, unless distortion is involved. But you'll still sound terrible if you don't know how to tune your guitar right, sounds really basic, but after seeing that there are guitars with robot tuners out there, I'm pretty sure the art of tuning your own guitar will be gone in a decade too. So just tune clean, no effect on, then turn on the effect.
There is a cool middle button that allows for you to go up a half step while the effect is on, kinda cool, but really just for effect...if you want to build a riff around that, cool, but I believe Tom Morello already did that. Also once the effect is on, you can only go down on the pedal, so this could be an issue for an active on stage guitarist, but I doubt that you'll be kicking your own effects, that is more likely going to be your klutzy singer.
I will recommend this to anyone at all that amplifies their guitar, clean or distorted, but accept the fact that on the clean sounds, you'll get more of an odd sound (slight warble, but it does exist if your are going to tune three steps down....it really does go three steps and a half down. I know...shocking) What I might suggest is learning how to feel comfortable with tuning down a half or whole step on your guitar, then setting the pedal to two whole steps down, I believe your sound will not be degraded on the clean effect.Mine was worth every penny and when I did combine it with my whammy pedal, I was able to create some wicked tones through a line-6 spider III. My "rig" isn't something to "behold" for those with the bucks or the drive to spend every last dollar on guitar related equipment, so if it sounds nice/great on my rig, I can only imagine what it will sound like on a really nice set up. (Not dissing my own stuff, but I do know that there are a lot of people out there with more in-depth set-ups) Buy it...or at least try it out.

I am really happy with this guitar. There are some problems though. The picture doesnt show the true color of the guitar, it's actually a little more bronze than reddish, which i like. The wiring inside the guitar is stuck by an adhesive that is covered in sawdust and no longer sticks anywhere so the wires are easily visible in the sound hole. However, i cont bring myself to send it back and get a new one because i cant stop playing it. To wait another week or two to get another one would be torture. The guitar sounds great and is easy to play both plugged in and unplugged. the onboard controls are nice and the tuner makes tuning easy. I even hooked it up to a distortion pedal for some fun
