(More customer reviews)The Alvarez RD20SC Acoustic Electric Guitar was a great purchase for me. I've been playing guitar off and on for a couple of years now (mostly electric), but I've been dying to get a nice acoustic for a good price.
The RD20SC had a couple of things that immediately attracted me to it. First of all, this guitar has solid wood everywhere. Spruce on top, mahogany on the bottom and sides. The guitar has a great amount of sustain to it when you play notes, and as the spruce wears in it'll sound even better. As well, the guitar was delivered with D'Addario strings, which are pretty solid and have a full tone to them. The action (the level of the strings from the fretboard) isn't too high, so I don't have a problem playing- but it's definitely a little more work than an electric.
A couple of things worth mentioning- the electric component on the side is the basic level system 200T, which includes the tuner and three controls for sound, treble, and bass. If you plan on extensively using this with an acoustic amp, I'd suggest you look at the AD60SC, which has the 600T Mk II system in it with more control options. For me, this guitar fringes on personal and semi-professional use, so I don't really need any fancy controls right now. As well, the bridge pins are plastic, but they're also a cheap and easy replacement.
Overall Points:
-This guitar is made out of some quality material, so expect a pretty full tone with decent sustain on it.
-In my opinion, this is a great mid-range acoustic electric. (mid-range being $400-800) It's definitely a step up from the cheap 200 dollar guitars with laminated bottoms.
-It has a gorgeous finish on it, and doesn't leave hand marks (but make sure to wipe it when you're done!)
-Alvarez makes quality guitars for a good price. Amazon offers this guitar at $200 currently, where other guitar stores who have it on "sale" list it for 390. Check Guitar Center, Musician's Friend, or your local music store.
-My only gripes- guitar didn't come with a pick, and they put the wrong electronic pre-amp manual in my box.
-If you're worried about ordering a guitar online, play it at a local store first to get a good feel for it. My guitar was wrapped well and didn't have a scratch on it when I got it from amazon.com.
For my needs, I definitely give this guitar 5 stars. Price, sound, and quality of materials definitely sealed the deal for me on this one.

Dean Performer Mini Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Classic Black Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a good guitar in this price range and had narrowed it down between the Ibanez AEL10EBK and the Dean Performer E Acoustic Electric Guitar. They seemed pretty equivalent from their description. Originally I had decided on the Ibanez because it had an established name (I never heard of Dean) and the pickup it used was an established brand ( a Fishman Sonicore). By contrast the Dean had it's own pickup which I knew nothing about. I was about to buy the Ibanez but I wanted to hear it first. I went to a local music store and took it down to try out. To my surprise it sounded very shallow, wooden, and muddy. There was very little resonance to the instrument. It sounded almost like a solid body guitar. When you strum all the strings at the same time it sounds muddled. I plugged in the Ibanez and found it sounded the same way. It was muddled. You didn't hear the individual strings. Just an overall "blahhh". As it happens, another music store down the street had the Dean Performer E so just for kicks I went there to try it out. I was shocked by how beautiful it sounded for such an inexpensive guitar. The instrument resonated. You could hear each string brightly and clearly. When plugged into an amp the sound was bright, and full. I also found that the Dean had an "on-board" tuner with a graphic LED output that allowed you to tune the guitar instantly. This tuner is actually one of the best I have ever used. It tells you exactly when the string is in tune. It doesn't bounce around all over the place like other tuners I've used. I found from this experience that "name" isn't everything. Sometimes products from an established and well known company can under-perform newcommers. In this case that is exactly what I found. Needless to say I bought the Dean and have been very happy with it since.

The price is very affordable and being so much below retail price it is SO worth it! Seagull Entourage Rustic CW QIT Acoustic-Electric Guitar Rustic Review

(More customer reviews)I won't lie to you, I'm a Seagull guy. I went in looking for a great guitar at a great price, and while I was open to veer away from my coveted Seagull-made guitars if the right deal were to be available, I simply couldn't do it. I tried out a bunch of different guitars in my price range, and the Seagull Entourage Rustic CW QI(T) won, hands down. First of all, the tuning machines are basically the solid chrome Ping tuning machine heads disguised with Seagull logos. I love this because I am very picky about my tuning machines and often swap out my guitars' machine heads for said Ping parts. Next, the nut width of the neck is narrower than the standard Seagull nut width, which makes it more comparable to a Martin or Taylor or something of that nature. This makes the transition for a non-Seagull acoustic player a little smoother. Third, the action is comfortable, but not too comfortable. If the action is too low and too easy to push down, sound is compromised, this is not so here. I believe this is the softest action a guitar can have without taking away from the sound or causing buzzing or things of that nature. The Godin electronics are flawless, and sleekly designed. As in the "Rustic" name, even the electronics stay true to this look, and the style and functionality are both top of the line. This is one of the few (if not only) Seagull in this price range with a cutaway, and that is important because it allows for more flexibility and mobility on the neck for those who like to utilize every available fret on the guitar. The overall look is nice. At first, I thought the sunburst was a little too much, but after a couple hours of staring at it, I have grown to love it. Finally the most important thing about this guitar is the sound. The guitar possesses a very full, vibrant, diverse sound. There is a slight twang in the timbre, but it is not overbearing, leaving for a warm and perfect acoustic sound for almost any style or application. I do not believe a better guitar can be bought for this price, but I must point out the negative. As with my old Seagull, the wood feels rather soft, so with some ruckus playing and misguided strumming, the wood can wear away and damage the surface more easily than other guitars. This is a small price to pay for an otherwise very powerful acoustic-electric package. Besides, I like when my guitars get that worn-in look, so this is not at all a negative for me personally. I would recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a guitar as in such a short time; it has grown so dear to my heart.

Let me tell you why:
-Low action (strings relatively close to fretboard for easier playing)
-Built-in tuner
-Amp capabilities
-Comes with it's own hardshell case
Those are probably the most attractive reasons for a beginner to buy this, but there are more pros like the following:
-Great resonance!
-Mature unglossed finish that looks very badass
-Doesn't have a buzz when you play notes in the middle of the fretboard (unlike my old Washburn WD10SCE [$250])
I cannot gush enough about this guitar because it's everything I wanted my first guitar to be.
Please seriously consider this item if you're looking for an amazing cutaway Electric-Acoustic guitar; it will not disappoint!

But here is my take--this guitar has a nice sound, looks beautful and has such a low actions that the strings practically play themselves. Also has extra strap button so you don't have to attach the strap at the head(easier on your neck). If you are a beginner you can take this guitar around expert musicians and not feel embarassed that you have a cheap 'starter guitar'. Also comes in lefty which is nice, but no fair that southpaws have to pay more than righties.
Overall, highly recommend.

(More customer reviews)I bought the OG10CE as a package from Austin Bazaar. As advertised it came with a stand, strings, and a gig bag. However they also included a strap, pick and a pitch pipe. The guitar is beautiful, the picture on Amazon does not do it justice. Take a look at the yellow sunburst finish here [...] to see what the pattern looks like -- mine looks like that except in a natural wood color.
I've played bass for 20 years and my wife just started playing electric guitar earlier this year. Seeing and hearing her learn made me want to give it a try too. We wanted the versatility of an acoustic electric and a smaller body that would be comfortable for both of us -- I've been playing a Steinberger bass lately so a dreadnought just felt too big for me. The built-in tuner is a nice feature, but most acoustic electrics seem to have them unless you go bottom of the line. Unplugged the guitar sounds great -- certainly not as full as a dreadnought, but I'll take that trade-off that comes with the comfort of the smaller, thinner body. Plugged in it sounds great too. The tone (3 band) and presence controls are really nice.
PROS:
Nice sound both plugged and unplugged
Very pretty wood finish -- we like just looking at it on the stand :)
Nice electronics
CONS:
haven't found any yet.
THE PACKAGE DEAL:
Pros: great price [...], free shipping, nice stand, bonus strap, pick and pitch pipe
Cons: the gig bag had an unbearable plastic smell. After washing it on "hand wash" it didn't smell any better. It literally stunk up the first floor of my house. It is also very thin and not very protective -- we bought a hard shell case and humidifier yesterday. However, the rest of the stuff you get in this package, free shipping, and the price make this an excellent deal. Maybe you can use the gig bag for a Rock Band controller. The only other con is that they only provided 3 replacement strings (GBE) not a full set, but they didn't claim they were sending a full set either. Of course the guitar comes strung with a full set -- de-tuned for shipping. But again, given the whole package it is quite a deal.

Fender Stratacoustic, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I have a lot to say about this Fender Stratacoustic, both good and bad, so if you are seriously considering buying one, please read this entire article. Out of the box, I was somewhat shocked. The overall appearance was not very good. I routinely see better finishes even on cheap guitars. The body is one-piece black plastic or resin, with a textured finish. It's not beautiful, but it's functional. The top is plywood painted gloss black. There is white binding around the top. Out of the box, the binding looked bad. There was glue all over it, and in places the binding was rough like it had been gone over with a file, and in one place, there was some black spray paint on the white binding. Next, the neck had a very pronounced bow in it, but I was able to straighten it out with a truss rod adjustment. It needed a lot of tightening, which was worrisome, but it turned out OK. [If you are not experienced with that, have a pro do it for you.] One thing that really irked me was that one corner of the faceplate of the built-in Fishman preamp/tuner was cracked. Whoever installed it, screwed it too tight and snapped it. It still works fine, but this is unacceptable, especially for a name-brand guitar. The finish of the wood around the sound hole was rough, too. So, for cosmetic appearance, I give this guitar a C-/D+. Their final QC inspection is a joke. Luckily, playing this guitar is a whole lot better than the finish. Here's the rest of the story. As I said, the body is not impressive, but the neck, (once properly adjusted), is pretty good, although the ends of the frets are a little rough and could use some filing down (Don't do that yourself either, unless you know what you are doing). The neck feels very strat-like. The guitar came with two bridges, one high and one low, (who knows why). I replaced the high bridge with the low bridge and ended up with a very playable action, close to an electric. You may even be inspired to put on light guage strings. The intonation is spot on for acoustic wound strings. Acoustically, the sound is poor, so don't buy this guitar if you want a great sounding acoustic guitar. I only play this guitar acoustically for practice. Where it shines is playing it through an amp. Fishman makes good electronics for acoustic guitars. This one sounds great. The built-in tuner is accurate enough. One other issue I had right off the bat, while out practicing for a gig, was that I had to change the battery which is accessed through a little trap door right next to the output jack. I opened the door expecting the battery to fall out, but the battery was stuck in there. As a matter of fact, it was so stuck that I had to pry it out with a tool. The problem is that there are two little wound springs which make contact with the 9V battery, but they get caught on the battery terminals and do not easily let go. This is a poor design, and one which I cannot live with, so I had to modify the entire battery compartment, and install a standard 9V snap-on connector with a long lead wire. It's not elegant, but it works. The battery comes out easily now, but changing it is a two handed operation. The tuning heads themselves turn hard and are not smooth, but they do hold a tune. The guitar has a nice thin body and the strat-like shape and feel, which is one of the main reasons I bought it. It is very comfortable, whether you are playing standing or sitting. In spite of the poor first impression and the other flaws, I do like the guitar a lot, but for the $250 I paid, and because it's a Fender, the quality of this instrument should have been a much better.

When this product arrived, I was amazed at the quality of the guitar itself. So then I proceeded to set up the amp and plug in the guitar. The sound was absolutely incredible. This was a great deal at a steal of a price. I went to a guitar store, saw the same package deal, for about $50 more than what I paid. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quality guitar. The only downside was the gig bag that came with it, but I picked up a new one at the local guitar store for about $50.

(More customer reviews)Before you read this understand I am new a playing guitar. That being said the features on this guitar are nice fir beginners, the Fishman tuning system is easy and work great. The sound is great (to me) Im sure others will differ but if your looking for a 200 dollar guitar you shouldn't nit-pick. But it has been about 6-7 months of hard play and I don't hear any new rattles or signs that things are coming apart. The finish is natural wood not polyurethane like nice ones. But this is a great beginners guitar.

(More customer reviews)I had some reservations about buying this guitar, but when the price fell below $175, I figured I would give it a try.
First off, if you are looking for a guitar to sound, feel and play like a high end ovation for $175, you are clearly insane.
This guitar has a nice feel, much better action that I had planned on, reasonably rich sound, decent electronics and the built in tuner was pretty usefull.
In all, for a acoustic / electric, you cant go wrong at this price.
The only goofy thing on this guitar is the V headstock which I thought looked pretty cool until i figured out it wont fit in any of my hard or soft cases.....so tack on $50 for a case that works!
