(More customer reviews)I own a 2009 Fender American Deluxe Strat among several other guitars. This is by far the nicest guitar I've ever owned. Mine is 3-tone sunburst, and the finish is flawless. I searched carefully and couldn't find anything wrong with it. It's an absolutely beautiful guitar. As soon as I took it out of the box, I immediately plugged it in to give it a whirl. My wife was in the other room and said,"I didn't know you could play guitar that good!" This is after twenty years of listening to me play. The setup was perfect for me out of the box. I didn't need to adjust a thing. The frets are extremely smooth and comfortable for extended playing. The neck is narrow like most Strats, but it works perfectly for my small hands. The noiseless pickups are actually noiseless! There was none of the annoying hum I have with my cheaper Squier Strat's single coil pickups. With the S-1 switch, it has a lot of different pickup combinations that allow me to play in almost any style from country to blues to metal. I haven't even figured out what all it can do yet. I just know it can make a ton of different sounds.
I have nothing bad to say. This is an excellent guitar. It's a high end, professional guitar at a decent price. I recommend it highly.

(More customer reviews)Note: this review is for the whole "kit", not just the guitar or the amp. Also, it pertains to all 3 colors; I don't know why they have them as separate packages. (Maybe the sunburst one has better sustain? Ummm...right. Mine is black, if it matters.)
I noticed people are not reviewing this on Amazon and frankly, that's a shame! They (guitar/amp) are a fabulous instrument. So we're clear, this is a budget and/or noob package but I say that in no way to impugn its quality. It's significantly ahead of any 'Targ-mart' special you can get for only a bit less; then again I got mine on Labor Day special for 1/2 price--awesome!
Let's get "the missing star" stuff out of the way first:
- The tone knobs for neck/middle are more like switches. 0-2 is "dark" and 3-10 is bright. There's not much in between.
- The "tremolo" bar (classic misnomer) and bridge are low-budget so this is upgrade territory. For me, I'm not much into the whammy, so it's moot.
- Of the 5 pickup settings, only the bridge-alone one sounds truly unique. However, this is not a biggee to me as it seems fairly common. The pickups are not high-end (another upgrade potential) but if you're a beginner or you're playing for fun, in a church band or anything where $ is not on the table these p'uppies are surprisingly good sounding!
So, back to our 4-star combo features. Though it's a Chinese-made Squier it's still a Fender and they have to maintain standards. The fretboard/neck feels good and is solid and the tuning knobs get the job done; mine stays in tune reasonably well. The guitar as a whole looks like a Strat--not much difference from 5 feet away so if you like the Strat look, this one will be pleasing. The little 10-watt Squier amp has nothing to be ashamed of! It's very simple and it complements the axe quite well; in fact I like its sound better than my Line 6 Spider III 15W amp. I've even seen it at pawn shops for $50 so people must realize that it's pretty impressive for its category. Finally, the quartz tuner works fine but there are better ones out there to be sure.
To put everything, especially quality, in perspective, I like to ask, "if you drug Eric Clapton into trading his million-dollar-baby for this model and, after he sobers up you both play them, who sounds better?"
So, thumbs up for this combo. Professional musicians may not want the guitar unless they want to use it for a "project" and do some surgery to turn it into a great player. But for younger/newer and/or cash-strapped folk, you'd do well to own one. Mine's a keeper!

(More customer reviews)You'll find many reviews of this product. Some claim it is the worst of the worst, and some love it.
It is a beginners guitar set, so take it as that. The tones that can be achieved are very clear, and the single coil pickups are actually quite good for a cheap guitar. If you want a cheap 100 dollar ebay guitar, go ahead, the pickups will likely be totally unusable. These are usable.
The tone knobs and wiring inside aren't the greatest, but they do their job. There is some 'scratching' sounds when you rotate a few knobs.
The amp it comes with has some nice beginner features, and the headphone output is a plus.
If you want to learn how to play guitar, this has enough to keep you satisfied until you've learned enough to justify a better guitar or amplifier. The guitar is much better then the amplifier, so i would suggest getting a new amp first (what i am doing currently)
Note: buy new strings for your guitar too! The stock strings arent that great.
Also: Buy a guitar strap that is GOOD. The one it comes with slips off, and i hit the side of my guitar on the CORNER of a wooden table...thank god for paint and super glue.

Starcaster by Fender Electric Guitar/Amp Package - Sunburst Finish Review

(More customer reviews)I have this guitar pack and I have to say that the number of negative comments is amazing. I am not sure what people expect for $200.00. No! This is not a $1200.00 dollar American made strat, nor is the $500.00 Mexican made strat. It's a low cost made in China strat.
Regardless of where it was made, I found the workmanship to be very acceptable. The guitar is beautiful and the rosewood fretboard is very nice. The whole guitar has a solid feel. My only real complaint is that the center pickup has an unusually low level output. But there is no way I would return this guitar just because of a single pickup. At worst case I'd just have Fender send a replacement. And Yes! As other reviews have noted, the amp hums a little (especially at higher volumes). But, this has more to with the single coil pickups used in the guitar. If you want humbucker pickups, you're going to pay more. Also the amp is just a small 10W practice amp. It works fine for lower volume practicing. I have fallen in love with mine and play it quietly in the evenings to relax from the world.
I have a family and very little extra money. I am greatful that Fender has provided these low cost kits. It gives me the opportunity to own and relax with a Fender, something that would be questionable with a better (read more expensive) guitar. And, if the kids develop an interest, I won't cry too much if they add a few scratches to it.
Folks need to keep things in perspective. This is a low cost entry level guitar. Understanding those limitations, I highly recommend this kit to anyone just starting out.

(More customer reviews)I have a lot to say about this Fender Stratacoustic, both good and bad, so if you are seriously considering buying one, please read this entire article. Out of the box, I was somewhat shocked. The overall appearance was not very good. I routinely see better finishes even on cheap guitars. The body is one-piece black plastic or resin, with a textured finish. It's not beautiful, but it's functional. The top is plywood painted gloss black. There is white binding around the top. Out of the box, the binding looked bad. There was glue all over it, and in places the binding was rough like it had been gone over with a file, and in one place, there was some black spray paint on the white binding. Next, the neck had a very pronounced bow in it, but I was able to straighten it out with a truss rod adjustment. It needed a lot of tightening, which was worrisome, but it turned out OK. [If you are not experienced with that, have a pro do it for you.] One thing that really irked me was that one corner of the faceplate of the built-in Fishman preamp/tuner was cracked. Whoever installed it, screwed it too tight and snapped it. It still works fine, but this is unacceptable, especially for a name-brand guitar. The finish of the wood around the sound hole was rough, too. So, for cosmetic appearance, I give this guitar a C-/D+. Their final QC inspection is a joke. Luckily, playing this guitar is a whole lot better than the finish. Here's the rest of the story. As I said, the body is not impressive, but the neck, (once properly adjusted), is pretty good, although the ends of the frets are a little rough and could use some filing down (Don't do that yourself either, unless you know what you are doing). The neck feels very strat-like. The guitar came with two bridges, one high and one low, (who knows why). I replaced the high bridge with the low bridge and ended up with a very playable action, close to an electric. You may even be inspired to put on light guage strings. The intonation is spot on for acoustic wound strings. Acoustically, the sound is poor, so don't buy this guitar if you want a great sounding acoustic guitar. I only play this guitar acoustically for practice. Where it shines is playing it through an amp. Fishman makes good electronics for acoustic guitars. This one sounds great. The built-in tuner is accurate enough. One other issue I had right off the bat, while out practicing for a gig, was that I had to change the battery which is accessed through a little trap door right next to the output jack. I opened the door expecting the battery to fall out, but the battery was stuck in there. As a matter of fact, it was so stuck that I had to pry it out with a tool. The problem is that there are two little wound springs which make contact with the 9V battery, but they get caught on the battery terminals and do not easily let go. This is a poor design, and one which I cannot live with, so I had to modify the entire battery compartment, and install a standard 9V snap-on connector with a long lead wire. It's not elegant, but it works. The battery comes out easily now, but changing it is a two handed operation. The tuning heads themselves turn hard and are not smooth, but they do hold a tune. The guitar has a nice thin body and the strat-like shape and feel, which is one of the main reasons I bought it. It is very comfortable, whether you are playing standing or sitting. In spite of the poor first impression and the other flaws, I do like the guitar a lot, but for the $250 I paid, and because it's a Fender, the quality of this instrument should have been a much better.

Fender Road Worn '50s Stratocaster Electric Guitar 2 Tone Sunburst Review

(More customer reviews)I work and teach in several music stores and get my hands on a lot of Strats. When I saw the Roadworn strat I was extremely sceptical and could hardly wait to scoff and critisize it.
First I was impressed with it's authentic feeling light weight. When I plugged it in (without knowing what pick-ups it had) I heard a great Strat-y tone. The 10 gauge set of strings (higher than standard shelf-strat gauges but lighter than my usual 11-52 preference) gave it great snap and twang. All the specs seemed as good as any relic I've played and of course the look was there.
The price was my only concern, almost as much as a "real thing" American strat. But it felt and sounded GREAT! I reached an agreement with store and went for it. I've used it on many jobs and really like it. I have no regrets or dissappointments. I own more expensive Strats, including the Custom Shop 1954, but frankly don't want to take them to the rougher gigs. And I can't afford an actual 50's strat, which I would REALLY be scared to take to some of these jobs.
I like the look, feel, fun, and most of all TONE of this strat, and it's not irreplaceable. I was sceptical, but it won me over.

And the e-mail they sent said it was going to arrive via USPS but it came via FEDEX. Also, it never let me track it. When I received the package, it had a hole in the side as if something was stabbed into it, luckily none of the merchandise was damaged. Other than that, let's get to the guitar. The guitar is a lot lighter than my first electric guitar (Rogue Rocketeer HSS). It sounds pretty good, I like the shiny fretboard and inlays. The guitar was in mint condition. The guitar was even tuned pretty good. Every string was only like a hole step down. I was expecting it to be like just really flat tuning, but I was surprised, I love Fender guitars, and glad I purchased this guitar, even though shipping wasn't the best, it was worth it because of the quality of the guitar. This is perfect for beginners, or even intermediate players. I would suggest adjusting the action and switch strings though.

Fender Artist Series Eric Clapton Stratocaster Electric Guitar Black Review

(More customer reviews)I cannot thank the guys at Kraft enough for the fantastic service they provided when I bought this guitar. And the effort they went to in helping me out was extreme. To say I love this guitar is an understatement. It damn near plays itself and my playing has improved out of site since I took delivery. I could not believe when I plugged it into my Marshall amp that there was nothing but silence until I started to play. Other guitars have given me small, but noticeable, feedback but his beauty was absolutely silent. Playability is supreme, in fact I picked up a "deluxe" Start the other day and it came nowhere near offering the ease of which this baby allows you to play. I was lucky enough to pick up the last one in the shop and I see there are a few still kicking around but I would recommend if you are looking to buy A Clapton Strat you act swiftly because they do not stay on the shelves for very long.

Ping P2652 6-in-line Screwless Mount Geared 6-left/Chrome Electric Guitar Part Review

(More customer reviews)I bought these because I wanted to replace the touchy tuners in my Squier Affinity Series "Fat Strat" (SN CY08114648) that I bought 2010-March-24.
I have read online that Ping P2652 6-in-line tuners are a drop-in replacement for the stock, flaky ones in my guitar. Well these Pings definitely APPEAR to be better-made tuners, with better craftsmanship. They even have a neat Ping logo on the bottom of each tuner.
It is important to note that these tuners do not screw into the stock from the bottom, but are basically held in the headstock from the top by a nut and washer ("threaded hex bushing") and "anchor spurs" on the bottom. If that sounds like you, then keep reading because there is more to it than that.
Simply put: These Ping P2652 tuners have *2-pins each*, (aligned with the tuning peg itself) to keep the part from spinning around. These are the "sharp anchor spurs" from the description.
However my Squier Affinity has *1-pin* right in the middle of the stock tuners...
Since these will not fit I decided to write this review in hopes of saving someone else the same aggravation.
Before you order these, unscrew one of the existing tuners with a pair of pliers or maybe a socket wrench the next time you change strings. This is easy to do, just don't scratch your headstock. That way you can check and see how many "anchor spurs" you have before you shell out the $$.
For the record, I can probably get some nice tuners in this price range that would fit after a little work with a "Tapered Reamer" and some patience.
BTW, I have learned in the last few months that most aspiring "Strat" electric guitar players are probably better off getting a used Peavey Predator or even a new Squier Bullet (both are cheaper than the Affinity!) as a starter guitar unless they have small hands or the guitar is for a child. As an oversimplification, this is due to how close the strings are together on an Affinity - aka "nut width". Another concern is how thin the Affinity's body is. Generally an Affinity may not sound as good and it may have somewhat limited upgrade potential (pickups, etc) compared to a thicker guitar
Bullet and Predator guitars are closer to the size specifications of a "real" Fender Stratocaster, and many players who are far better than I say they sound better to boot!
Your best value might be the Squier by Fender Stop Dreaming, Start Playing Set: SE Special w/ Squier by Fender SP10 Amplifier, Brown Sunburst though.
That guitar is "full-sized", has 22 frets, a 3-ply pick guard and also comes with an amp, gig bag, stand, strap, picks, tuner.. the works!
Now I need to find out if I can return these brand-new tuners. Maybe I'll put this Squier on eBay...
UPDATE 2011-Jun-02: I was able to return the Ping tuners.
I ate the shipping cost but that is better than nothing!

(More customer reviews)These are a direct fit for my PRS SE Santana guitar. They will probably outlast me and my grandchildren. I wish the knobs looked more like what PRS uses though so they looked more like factory parts instead of aftermarket, but whatever. Price is agreeable (around 45 American dollars for chrome at the time I purchased). Since the price is probably cheaper than what you could get a set of PRS SE factory tuners(or probably any brand name) for, I just don't understand why they dont use them in the first place or at least an in-house locking no name brand. That is the biggest hang up separating these guitars from their mega $$$$$ brethren.(hey Sterling by music man can do it at this price range)But I digress. If you are replacing crappy tuners with 10mm mounting holes you may not have to drill anything exept the little holes where the screws go in if you get these. If you're lucky you won't. I didn't. These things lock as you tune (no thumb wheel) and makes a marked improvement in tuning stability(not floyd rose perfect though). The holes where you run the string are offset so you could possibly string them up wrong. Just pay attention and you'll be okay.

Ok, I oredered this guitar without the illusion of it being a great guitar. I've played guitar for 15 years and have fallen in love with the Billy Corgan sig. strat. So I chose the Startcaster as a spring board for modifications.
When I got into the Starcaster i quickly did an assesment:
1. the low E buzzed; if you have this problem then look straight down on top of the guitar from the top of the head stock. you will see that the low E notch has been cut deeper than the rest of the strings.
2. the tuning pegs (not the key itself) are wobbly, which lead to retunes after each chord you strum
3. the bridge isnt bolted down tight; mine was loose when i took the strings off. first i noticed the bridge "slinking" off the body when i'd do a bend.
4. the tone knobs arent aligned right with the numbers on them.
5. the fret board has an extremly weird varnish on it that cause the strings to make a scratchy sound.
6. i took the back panel off and saw that the tension springs were warped and werent putting to much resistance against the bridge.
7. under the pickguard was a sad sight: tons of saw dust and a couple extra screws that didnt have anything to do with the guitar were tossed in (two were magnetically stuck to the neck and mid pick-up. wiring looked ok, but bad soilder jobs.
here's what i did:
Machine head: i put black wilkinson E-Z lock tuners
Pick-ups: bridge- DiMarzio Chopper Mid- DiMarzio Fast Track 2 Neck- DiMarzio Pro Track
Nut: Replacded with a Graphite 1.65"
Tension Springs: DiMarzio Tremolo Bridge (guitar comes with 3; i replaced with 5)
Neck: sanded the frets and filed the fret wires; buzz is gone
I recomend strap locks!!!
oh and i didnt mention the whammy bar; it was bent in an odd direction, but i'm not Eddie Van Halen so i dont use one. 0;)

THIS GUITAR IS SIMPLY GREAT AND YOU GET THE WHOLE PACKAGE. IT PLAYS EASY, HAS A 5 POSITION PICKUP SELECTOR, IS VERY WELL MADE IN CONSTRUCTION AND APPEARANCE. IN THE NECK PICKUP POSITION, THE GUITAR HAS A SWEET AND ROUND JAZZ SOUND WHICH REALLY SURPRISED ME. THE OTHER SELECTOR SWITCHES RUN THE RANGE FROM ROCK TO ALL THE OTHER SOUNDS THE KIDS JUST LOVE. SO MY GRANDSON HAS THE OPTION OF PLAYING DIFFERENT STYLES AND SOUNDS. OF COURSE, I HOPE HE GRAVITATES TO JAZZ.
THE ROSEWOOD FRETBOARD IS VERY EASY TO PLAY AND THE GUITAR IS STRUNG WITH FENDER LIGHT GAUGE STRINGS WHICH ENHANCES PLAYABILITY ESPECIALLY FOR A YOUNGSTER STARTING OUT,AND,THERE IS NO DEGRADATION OF TONE. AGAIN, I WAS VERY SURPRISED.
THE AMP IS A VERY NICE PRACTICE AMP AND PRODUCES A LOVELY SOUND.
THIS PACKAGE EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS AND I AM SO HAPPY THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET THIS FOR MY GRANDSON.

I tried cheaper tuners, but they didn't quite cover up the imprints left by the original tuners. I also didn't want to mangle my neck by drilling new holes.

(More customer reviews)Great product for every guitarist. If you're looking specifically at locking machineheads, they're not quite as good as sperzel's, but better than planetwaves' auto-trim. I have the Sperzels on my other les paul and I got these for my new one because I thought they were the same diameter as the standard green key tuners and I wouldn't have to drill. Unfortunatley they were a little bigger, but it's easy to drill out the holes. The only reason I like the sperzels a little better is because string change is about 1 min faster, but these are still extremely fast and they're cheaper!
Locking tuners are a MUST upgrade for any every-day player because even if you string it exactly as you're supposed to, the strings still slip and take days to finally settle. The 18:1 ratio is great also, I thought it would take forever to tune up but they lock up quick and you're in tune in a couple of revolutions, and because it's such a large ratio, you get an extremely precise tune. They are very heavy and it took a minute to get use to the added headstock weight but I think it actually helped balance out my bottom-heavy LP.

(More customer reviews)I replaced the stock tuners on my 1996 MIM Strat. The swap was easy. It didn't come with instructions and one thing you should know, there are two different sizes (3 each.) The short shafts are for e, b & g strings the taller are for the d, a and e strings. :)
