Just finished installing two sets of these, and they're a pleasure to work with. They are well designed and well machined, working smoothly, installing easily, and doing exactly what they say they will. They've shown no slippage, and they're a nice looking addition to the guitar!

Grover 505C Mini Roto-Grip Locking Rotomatic Tuners, 3-Per-Side, Chrome Review

Grover 505C Mini Roto-Grip Locking Rotomatic Tuners, 3-Per-Side, Chrome

Once you put these babies on your 12 string guitar, you will never go back to standard tuners. I got a pair of the larger version of Grover locking tuners to refurbish my old acoustic 6 string and wondered why I had waited so long. Previous experience with Grover tuners some 45 years ago should have kicked in and told my brain to do this. These mini's were not made for acoustic, but I put them on my 35 year old 12 string (2 sets of 3 X 3) and now it takes about 5 minutes to change the strings. That is as compared to about 2 hours without the locking feature of these tuners. And you don't have to have miniature hand and a 3rd arm growing out of your chest anymore when you start winding them either. I don't know why nobody else makes quality tuners for 12 strings. There is plenty of room on the headstock for these mini heads. The guitar also stays in tune better, looks better, and has a deeper-warmer-richer tone. I will never have a guitar without Grover locking tuners of one form or another. Trust me, with locking tuners your life will be soooooo much easier when restringing. One of the reason 12 stings set in the corner is because when the strings get old and won't stay in tune, it's such a hassle to change them. Insert, screw down, snip, wind, play. It's that simple. I love this product, as well as its big brother. I also recommend medium stings, as they stay in tune much better, so your 12 sting will be used for playing instead of decoration.

Since replacing my old tuners, my guitar stays in tune. It's like having a new guitar No more fumbling with every tuner 5 or 6 times and calling it good. Radical for this guitarist I just tune it and work on my lessons. If I had known before hand about Grover tuning keys I would have invested years ago. Don,t let this happen to you, you may have more talent than you think. If you find yourself on a plateau of having little progress, this may help

Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines, 3+3, Chrome Review

Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines, 3+3, Chrome

I have two sets of these tuning machines on other guitars...a Gibson Les Paul Studio and a G&L USA Legacy, and I really like them. I find the atuo-trim feature really cool!! Plus they are just well made, solid tuning machines. I recently bought a PRS SE Custom 22 and had been told that the tuning machines on these guitars were not that great. So I went with Planet Waves because of the performance of those I already have. Unfortunately, I found that all of the unwound strings slipped through, no matter how tightly I screwed down the locking screws. I had read on other reviews that a batch of these had gone out that were slightly out of spec. So I contacted the retailer...Springdale Music, by e-mail. I waited a week and never got a response. So I contacted D'Addario directly by phone and the guy there confirmed that some sets had gone out with screws that were just a bit short and asked for my address to send me out replacements for all three. He even gave me his name and told me to call back if this didn't solve the problem and they'd send me out a new set. The call took less than 5 minutes, and 2 days later I had the replacement parts! The tuning machines work perfectly now!! I was very impressed with Planet Waves response...not so much with Springdale Music...they should have at least responded, even if just to tell me to contact D'Addario directly.
So, if you get a set of these (or already have one) and find the strings are slipping through, call D'Addario at the number on the packaging ASAP...they will make it right!!

I bought these tuning keys for my Les Paul studio. It is Grover tuners in a Gibson package. "Grover" is printed on the tuners. Great tuners. But be aware that the Grovers have only one screw, whereas the original Gibsons have 4.

Grover 106G Locking Rotomatic Tuners/Machine Heads, 3-Per-Side, Gold Review

Grover 106G Locking Rotomatic Tuners/Machine Heads, 3-Per-Side, Gold

Great product for every guitarist. If you're looking specifically at locking machineheads, they're not quite as good as sperzel's, but better than planetwaves' auto-trim. I have the Sperzels on my other les paul and I got these for my new one because I thought they were the same diameter as the standard green key tuners and I wouldn't have to drill. Unfortunatley they were a little bigger, but it's easy to drill out the holes. The only reason I like the sperzels a little better is because string change is about 1 min faster, but these are still extremely fast and they're cheaper!
Locking tuners are a MUST upgrade for any every-day player because even if you string it exactly as you're supposed to, the strings still slip and take days to finally settle. The 18:1 ratio is great also, I thought it would take forever to tune up but they lock up quick and you're in tune in a couple of revolutions, and because it's such a large ratio, you get an extremely precise tune. They are very heavy and it took a minute to get use to the added headstock weight but I think it actually helped balance out my bottom-heavy LP.

I recently bought these to put on an old Ibanez acoustic guitar I bought way back in 1994. Immediately it began playing better than it ever did! Half the battle is keeping your guitar in tune and these will do the trick. Whether you buy the 18:1 or the 14:1 ratio Grovers, you won't regret it.
