Cremona SV-1260 Maestro First Violin, Full-Size Review

Cremona SV-1260 Maestro First Violin, Full-Size

This tuner functions perfectly in environments with ambient noises that are loud and random. It's perfect for outdoor performance warmups.

I've also used it in other ways. This particular band I'm teaching (brass, with some woodwind work) tunes extremely well by ear. During pre-show or pre-rehearsal warmups I put the section in an arc around me and randomly select a student to provide the reference pitch (Bb concert). I then attach the tuner to their instrument, show them how to read it and have them sweep across the arc 4 times while sounding the reference pitch. Since the student can see the tuner while sweeping across the arc, they can hold the pitch steady for the rest of the arc to hear. In addition, the students in the arc can play, if they wish, to match their pitch to the student sweeping the arc. Since the tuner in unaffected by all of this, the student sweeping the arc can still provide the correct tuning reference. Even the weakest, least experienced players are able to keep the pitch steady enough for reference tuning purposes.

The piccolo players especially like it when I let the section leader "wear" it on her instrument during marching rehearsals and she can constantly monitor the tuning of the section. I highly recommend it to anyone working in the marching music arts.

My rig sounds like vintage 70's Country and Rock stuff. It doesn't get any purer than this! I'm now looking into their distortion pedal (yellow box). This phase is a true gem I highly recommend it!

Kratt Master Key Chromatic Pitch Pipe with Note Selector - C to C Review

I purchased this item for my husband who leads Acapella singing in the church of Christ services. He is very satisfied with the product and low price found on amazone. He particularily likes the note selector which more accurately helps him get the right pitch the first time. Highly recommended by my song leading husband.

Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers Star Head Review

Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers Star Head
Average Reviews:

Okay, he couldn't have been...must have been one of those European-made pianos with non-standard-sized pegs.
No. He's right. This tuner doesn't fit: loose on some pegs, not even close on others. From looking at the star head, it appears that some of the points are rounded off while others aren't; this may be why the tuner fits on some pegs and not others, depending on their orientation.
The wooden handle was also split two inches back from the ferrule.
All around, this is not a well made tool and I would not recommend that you take a chance on it.
On the other hand, the merchant, WWBW, is outstanding and very helpful. Their handling of my complaint was above reproach. I will do business with them in the future.
UPDATE: I exchanged this tuner for a square-ended one. It works acceptably, but still slips some on a few of the pegs. I won't complain, however, since the square-end hammer does get the job done.

Professional Piano Tuning Kit Review

Professional Piano Tuning Kit
Average Reviews:

The tuning lever appears to be a cheap imitation of one of the better brands. The star tip stripped out almost immediately because it is a poor quality metal that is chrome plated. Better ones use hardened steel. The tapering also was not done correctly. While it seems like a bargain, spend a few more dollars and go with a Schaff-Hale or similar brand. Except for the tuning fork, felt and mutes, this kit is a waste of money.

Apprentice Piano Tuning Hammer & Mutes Kit Review

Apprentice Piano Tuning Hammer and Mutes Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
They shipped the item out right away and I got it a couple days after ordering. Fast.
The product gave the little Wurlitzer spinet piano I grew up with a new life. It sat for the last four decades at my parents house neglected.
When they moved to a retirment home it came back to me. I put off tuning it for awhile as it was a bit hard to look at.
I finally got around to it and the kit changed the instrument into one I no longer recognize. It sounds so beautiful now that it brings tears to my eyes. Mom would surely have felt the same.
I was very careful to bring the piano up in stages to reduce shock. The kit worked just fine combined with an iPhone app, (cleartune), and was just what I needed. Since the piano needs several touch-ups, doing it myself was the only way to go.
I'm sure glad I did.
Thank you.
J.P.

Kratt Master Key Pitch Pipe C to C, Amazon Review

Kratt Master Key Pitch Pipe C to C, Amazon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In response to the review below: I've been using one Master Key pitchpipe for decades with excellent results. In spite of the revolution of electronic, then digital, tuners, the good ol' Master Key is amazingly reliable for such a cheap, pocket-sized instrument. The one catch is: Yes, it does depend on how you play it. It is a small reed instrument, like a harmonica, and reeds bend if you over-blow them. The correct "technique" for this "pitch instrument" (that's what they call it) is to first inhale a deep breath, then blow into the selected pitch hole very evenly and gently out of the smallest opening one can get one's mouth to make, and it seems to sound better with the silver side up. May all your melodies be on key.

Cherub Intonation Trainer Review

Cherub Intonation Trainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The product comes with the most important accessories (earbud, contact microphone) and has a very easy to understand interface. The functions are all very useful and the built in speaker is loud and very clear (volume adjustable). It has a better built in metronome than I've used on some stand alone metronome units. As for the pitch training function it was intended for, it has positives and negatives...
The pitch recognition and playback does actually work as described most of the time. However, you have to be very close to the pitch for it to play the correct pitch back, which is odd since you can see on screen that it definitely recognizes what note it hears you being closest to. So it doesn't help much more than a standard digital tuner if your intonation is significantly off (as mine sometimes is) and is best suited for fine tuning an already good sense of pitch/finger position. Another problem though is that, at least with the violin, it picks up a lot of overtones and sometimes treats those as the recognized pitch. So for instance you might be playing an open D but the tuner is playing back a high G or A to you. The speed of response in pitch recognition varies a lot. Occasionally it will respond wonderfully quick, giving you a note almost simultaneously with your attack...other times it seems to take a few seconds to respond. I'm not sure what factors are causing this for me, it could be other variables such as ambient noise, etc.
I give this 4 stars instead of 3 for the number of helpful functions this has in one unit. For the price it's actually very handy and a good value for beginner players.

Farley's Pocket Tones PT-16 Chromatic F Tuner Review

Farley's Pocket Tones PT-16 Chromatic F Tuner
Average Reviews:

After a dramatic (and quite embarrassing) failure with our gospel quartet's reed pitchpipe, it was time for an update/upgrade -- and the Farley's Pocket Tones got the job. So far, I'm pleased with the overall functionality, although the tone could be more aesthetically pleasing. It has all the timbre of a smoke alarm -- which is to say, it's a pure tone without any overtones. For the money, it can't be beat ... but I'd have paid a few more bucks to get a more subtle/pleasing/unobtrusive tonality.

Impulse buy at Guitar Center, [...] they were out of basic tuners. This has tons of features I did not need which confused me, but learning. Had to call a friend that is a REAL musician to find out what key I should tune in(C). Guitars tuned up fast with it in auto mode. Directions not really needed (useless) if your reading this, unit is very self teaching and it remembers how you used it last time, so you just turn it on and tune. I now know what transposition tuning is thanks to a 5 minute phone call. Or you can read this: [...]

that is very "cheap". I tried putting it on my violin and it doesn't stick,
the "suction" apparently doesn't work.
