DOC RUSS HERE,
ANYBODY THAT HAS READ ANY OF MY REVIEWS, KNOWS I DEMAND QUALITY. EVEN LOW QUALITY IS BETTER THAN JUNK.
"NEW" MADE ME THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER THAN THE OTHERS THAT HAVE THE NAME DIAMOND HEAD ON THEM. I WAS WRONG.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE. THERE ARE BETTER ONES AT $10 TO $20 DOLLARS MORE.

Lanakai LU11 Standard (Soprano) Ukulele Review

Lanakai LU11 Standard (Soprano) Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Buying this ukulele was a plunge - there were no reviews at the time on Amazon and barely any on the Internet. The plunge was successful. This is a wonderful little instrument. It's easy to use, both to tune and to play. Other ukuleles have had complaints of shoddy craftmanship, that they could actually see the glue holding it together. The LU11 looks well made without a hint of glue. My only complaint is about the booklet that comes with the uke. Maybe I just need things spelled out, but it seemed like some things were left out that an experienced player would just take for granted. That's not really a problem, though, since the 'net is sure to have the information you need.
Also, if you can...buy the case made specifically for the LU11. It is amazing.

Kala KA-C Mahogany Concert Ukulele Review

Kala KA-C Mahogany Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This uke took about 2 weeks to stablize the strings, neck, and tuning pegs. After it settled in, it really shined and still shines. I just picked it up after letting it collect dust for 2 months and it was in perfect tune. I am satisfied with the quality of the product. THe intonation up the frets is very close to dead on which means there was some engineering skill put into this peice. Very fair quality/price ratio here. If ever I get time to pass away, this will be part of my entourage.
Warning: Can be hard to put down or pass by without picking up.

Kala Makala Tenor Ukulele Starter Pack with FREE Gift Review

Kala Makala Tenor Ukulele Starter Pack with FREE Gift

My Makala tenor uke arrived on time and in perfect condition (packaged very well). Not a scratch or blemish on the finish. It comes with black strings, I think they are nylon, and held it's tuning pretty much right from the start. All the frets are smooth and the action is nice. Once I found the "sweet spot" it has a nice, rich tone. I also bought a Mahalo soprano uke, but find it a bit too small for me, and a little "tinny". I'd definitely recommend the Makala as an excellent starter instrument for someone who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a decent uke.

Lanikai LU-21C Concert Ukulele Review

Lanikai LU-21C Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went to an OMEA convention and went to a vendor stand with a variety of Ukulele and the best one there was the Lanikai S-C. I wanted to save some money so I decided to go with the LU-21C. It's the same quality of build, but has a mahogany plywood top instead of a spruce top. This means that it lacks some higher overtones (it's warmer, darker, what ever you want to say.) I've played many crappy instruments for around this price range and bellow and this one is not a crappy instrument. The only thing that needed some set up was the nut, but that is a common problem and a quick fix on most low end guitars and ukes. Most manufacturers ship such instruments out with a high nut. Are you not sure you want a ukulele? Get this one to find out.

Mahalo U-50G Economy Soprano Ukulele with Geared Tuning Pegs and Gig Bag (Natural) Review

Mahalo U-50G Economy Soprano Ukulele with Geared Tuning Pegs and Gig Bag (Natural)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Ukulele from Amazon. I also own a Lanikai LU-21P Pineapple Ukulele and a Lanikai LU-21C concert Ukulele.
But this Mahalo Soprano Ukulele is my favorite Ukulele.
The strings stay some what tuned after a few days of stretching. The sound is not great when compared to my Lanikai with Aquila strings but good enough for everyday practicing. The only string that does not sound as good is the C string being the lowest in tone. The geared tuners works well. The finishing is satisfactory. The included bag is good enough for me. This Ukulele is perfect for students for it has good intonation, playable, and cheap. I am very satisfy with this Ukulele. Best Value for my money.

Perfect for those who prefer the guitar-style geared tuners on their ukulele, this affordable, soprano-sized Mahalo U-50G ukulele offers a gorgeous maple body that's stained mahogany brown, and its fingerboard and bridge are also constructed of maple but stained black. It's complemented by nickel-plated friction pegs and guitar-style 14:1 ratio geared tuning machines for easier tuning. A black gigbag included.

Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Ukulele Review

Oscar Schmidt OU5 Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my first beginner ukulele only six months ago, but enjoyed enough that I decided to move up from the toy class to something a little better. The OU5 was on sale at under a hundred dollars, but I have to say that the leap in quality and sound far outweighed the $70 price difference between this and my first ukulele. Like others who have rated Oscar Schmidt products, I have been impressed by the beautiful finish of this instrument, but it's the improved action and sound quality that totally won me over. Go ahead and buy your $20 Rogue instrument to see if you like the ukulele, but when you're ready to step up to the next level (but perhaps aren't ready to shell out $250), this is a solid stepping stone. I'm really happy with this instrument. Keep your really cheap one to take to the beach, though. You'll like this one enough that you won't want someone grinding sand into the finish or spilling beer on it.

Lanikai LU-11 Soprano Ukulele Review

Lanikai LU-11 Soprano Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a former solid-body guitar builder and also a music teacher of younger children, teenagers and adults. I also play bass, guitar, ukelele and piano.
I bought this LU-11 ukelele to experiment with the idea of turning the ukelele into a soprano guitar that is easier for younger children to learn than even a 1/2 size guitar. That way they get all the benefits of the small size, while still learning chords and notes that apply to the top four strings of a guitar. Eventually, they can move onto 6-string guitar, and everything they've learned with the soprano guitar applies.
This instrument met all my expectations for playability and sound. It sounded good, was well intonated, and was pretty loud for such a small instrument. I didn't notice a big difference in the sounds between this model, and the more expensive LU-21 model. It was just as easy to play.
The finish was pretty good -- a deeper, richer color than the LU-21 model I also own.
Also, when I put on the nylon soprano guitar strings (which make it tune to D-G-B-E) like the top four strings of a guitar, it held its tune very quickly! After only two hours of playing the instrument, it held its tune for several hours of playing, which surprised me. This was probably due to the strings I was using (La Bella Octave guitar strings -- also known as classical soprano guitar strings). This is also a tribute to the tuners the LU-11 comes with, which are geared and did a good job of keeping the instrument in tune.
However, the instrument did have flaws. All parts of the instrument had something I would consider a cosmetic flaw, which my LU-21 soprano ukelele didn't possess. For example, the fingerboard appeared to have some kind of filler in one spot, and a blotch in the second fret area. The headstock had a small gouge in it at the end, as if some of the open-grained wood had flaked off. Also, the headstock had an indentation beside one of the tuners, as if someone had knocked it against something during manufacturing. The body had a bit of a light spot on one edge where perhaps the finish stain hadn't been applied deeply enough. And there were rough spots on the underside, between the two bouts, which I could feel when I was playing the instrument.
However, I gave this a "4-star rating" because at 30-odd dollars plus minimal shipping costs, it provides an affordable, playable instrument for a young person or an adult. And the fact that it could also be turned into a soprano guitar was a huge boon.
I recommend anyone on a budget who wants to get into Ukelele/Soprano guitar playing easily. If you want better cosmetics in the instrument, and the same playability, get the LU-21. But if you want to save a few dollars and don't mind a few cosmetic flaws, get the LU-11. Personally, I think the LU-11 may have been conceived by Laniki as way to use up B-stock materials. I think they took component parts with little flaws in them during their LU-21 production and put them together into instruments which they called the LU-11. However, I'm only speculating.
Overall, good insrument if you don't mind a few little flaws here and there.
