Kala KA-15S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele Review

(More customer reviews)My husband and I started playing ukulele this summer. We wanted small instruments to take camping. I was afraid the soprano would be too small, so I bought a concert size Kala in electric blue (I thought the color was fun). My hubby got a tenor Kala in Mahogany. Within a month I realized my shiny blue concert was too slippery and slid down my belly while playing in a standing position. I put a couple of small velcro squares on the back to prevent slipping but it didn't help much. I decided to get a soprano in Mahogany and ordered a Kala since the first two were well made.
When the soprano Kala it arrived I was happy to see it came with Aquila strings which are better quality than the original strings on the other two Kalas. We changed the strings on the other two ukes for Aquilas based on recommendations from seasoned uke players.
The soprano size is plenty big enough for me, although my husband says his big fingers have trouble fitting on the smaller neck after playing his tenor. The tone is snappy, and the workmanship is exceptional for such a cheap musical instrument. Since we now have three Kalas and none have flaws, I wholeheartedly recommend this brand.

Kala Makala Concert Ukulele Starter Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the starter pack for my husband for Christmas. He was happy with it, but it did not come with a Clip-On Chromatic Tuner as stated in the product description. Instead it came with a "pitch tuner" which is irritating and misleading. One of the main reasons I got this specific pack was because of the clip-on tuner. I see that another review had the same experience after I purchased the pack. It's okay for use and my husband is happy, but if I had to do over I would have gone with a different pack.

Kala Makala Tenor Ukulele Starter Pack with FREE Gift Review

(More customer reviews)My Makala tenor uke arrived on time and in perfect condition (packaged very well). Not a scratch or blemish on the finish. It comes with black strings, I think they are nylon, and held it's tuning pretty much right from the start. All the frets are smooth and the action is nice. Once I found the "sweet spot" it has a nice, rich tone. I also bought a Mahalo soprano uke, but find it a bit too small for me, and a little "tinny". I'd definitely recommend the Makala as an excellent starter instrument for someone who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a decent uke.

(More customer reviews)I got a burr up my butt to start playing the ukulele. So I went onto Amazon and started looking. There are many brands and many many prices for what seems like the same product. Kala is a strong brand and they make many different models starting from about $50 and up. I didn't want a $300 Uke just to find out it wasn't for me. So I opted for a "starter kit", a uke, a bag, and a tuner...all for $89. It's a smart way to go. The uke sounds good but is difficult to keep in tune due to the cheaper tuners, but don't let that scare you away. These are fine quality instruments, not toys. I was so happy with my purchase (and my supposed ability to play) that I recently stepped up to a Kala Travel Uke, uke and bag around $160. Very nice, great tuners (stays in tune), nice sound, very quality feel. Anyway, that's my story, and I'm happy with the way I did it. Thanks, Alj

The Kala KA-S Ukulele (with binding, as shown here), is a decent starter ukulele for the young and young at heart. It is a decent starter ukulele if you want to learn and don't want to break the piggy bank. This is a standard (soprano) size ukulele with little frills. However, it does not have the toy ukulele look or sound, and the binding around the body adds a bit of class to its appearance. It has geared tuners, not friction pegs. This makes tuning the ukulele a tad easier.
There is also a version without the binding, but for the same price Kala Mahogany Soprano Ukulele with No Binding.
Though the name implies it is made of mahogany, it is actually made of laminate nato, which is referred to as "eastern mahogany" and is often used in inexpensive guitars and ukuleles. However, don't let the make fool you... this baby sounds impressive. I still play with a KA-S every now and then, and I use it as my beater uke. It's not solid wood, and therefore does not have the solid wood sound. But it is still an impressive little instrument. I generally do not like to purchase music instruments online, but I would make an exception with these.
Kala production models tend to already have decent action (not too high or low), though some might complain the action is a bit high. It is easy enough to sand the saddle down to your preference. The nut is glued, but can come off with a bit of effort. Make sure you get the ones with Nylgut strings (Aquilla) and not the GHS, because it will make the ukulele sound so much better. If it comes with other strings, you can always change the strings (it's quite easy). Also, keep in mind that the strings are usually nylon, and are prone to stretching, so don't be surprised if it seems that it is off tune by a half step (or a whole step even) a few hours after tuning. Give it a week or two of having to retune every day (or in between every song, if you play a lot). After the strings are stretched out, it will generally stay in tune.
Comparing qualities and build, it is comparable to the Lanikai LU-21. There is little difference between the two, and for the price, the Lanikai is cheaper by ~$6 and eligible for Amazon Prime (free shipping!).

Kala KC02 Clip-on Tuner Review

I was surprised how small and easy to use it was.
I tried on line tuners, whistles, and a large guitar tuner, but this little guy takes the cake, simple, fast, effective and is small enough to fit anywhere (within reason),
the tuning part is a little smaller then a new VW key fob, with a clip attached.
