Squier by Fender Black and Chrome Standard Stratocaster HSS Rosewood, Black w/ Mirrored Pickguard Review

Squier by Fender Black and Chrome Standard Stratocaster HSS Rosewood, Black w/ Mirrored Pickguard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, this is the first electric guitar I ever bought, it was some years ago, and I was excited.
Over the years, it got pretty worn down.
It is a nice guitar, everybody loves the pickguard, but the pickguard will get scratched up and be kinda ugly.
The pickups aren't bad, factory strings aren't either, but you have to upgrade the strings sometime.
It has a nice sound, nice paintjob, I wouldn't recommend any really insane wammies, it'll bend the neck, but it has an adjustable truss bar, which is nice.
Overall, nice guitar, I would recommend getting something in the price range that is better, though, maybe a used B.C. Rich ASM standard.

I purchased this item for my husband who leads Acapella singing in the church of Christ services. He is very satisfied with the product and low price found on amazone. He particularily likes the note selector which more accurately helps him get the right pitch the first time. Highly recommended by my song leading husband.

This is an amazing guitar for this price range. It has a wonderful, deep, rich sound that is especially good for fingerpicking but also sounds great when strummed. Grover tuners keep it right on the money. It has a 1.73 inch nut so the action is fast and smooth. PLUS it looks amazing. Quilted ash on the back and sides in addition to the butterfly, rosewood bridge and hopi fret markers etc. A great guitar at a great price with a sound that competes with guitars at much higher prices.

Silvertone LB11 Bass Guitar and Amp Package, Liquid Black -SSLB11PK-BK Review

Silvertone LB11 Bass Guitar and Amp Package, Liquid Black -SSLB11PK-BK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just recently fell for the Bass. I was looking for a package, since I'm a noob and still have so much to learn. Based on the looks and reviews, this seemed to be the best bass kit for the price.
Like many I was kind of worried after ordering, the contents of the negative reviews began to sink deeper into my mind, but it arrived yesterday and I have no complaints concerning the BASS.
The accessories however, are pretty shoddy. The bag has NO padding and the strap is thin and actually hurts my shoulder. It would be suitable for a ukulele, not a heavy bass. These are two things I will need to replace very soon...ahhhhh more money....
I also have trouble understanding people's complaints about the amp. I may not know much, but this thing is LOUD and I never put the volume all the way up. I can see it being covered by drums, but i play with my obnoxious nephew on his electric guitar, amp and all, and have no trouble hearing what I'm playing.
The instructional DVD is a bit....weird. I wasted about 20 mins on it...but I think that aside from maybe a scale or two you can get much better lessons and tutorials on youtube.
All in all this is a great Bass for my situation. I am a beginner with my only prior musical experience being with the Violin, along with an ongoing lesson on guitar. I'm picking this up for a new hobby and so this sufficient. Very nice sound, look and weight. This is a great way to transition into the bass guitar!

Kala KA-S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele Starter Pack with Club Entry Review

Kala KA-S Mahogany Soprano Ukulele Starter Pack with Club Entry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got a burr up my butt to start playing the ukulele. So I went onto Amazon and started looking. There are many brands and many many prices for what seems like the same product. Kala is a strong brand and they make many different models starting from about $50 and up. I didn't want a $300 Uke just to find out it wasn't for me. So I opted for a "starter kit", a uke, a bag, and a tuner...all for $89. It's a smart way to go. The uke sounds good but is difficult to keep in tune due to the cheaper tuners, but don't let that scare you away. These are fine quality instruments, not toys. I was so happy with my purchase (and my supposed ability to play) that I recently stepped up to a Kala Travel Uke, uke and bag around $160. Very nice, great tuners (stays in tune), nice sound, very quality feel. Anyway, that's my story, and I'm happy with the way I did it. Thanks, Alj

Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers Star Head Review

Grover-Trophy Pitchpipe Piano Tuning Hammers Star Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, he couldn't have been...must have been one of those European-made pianos with non-standard-sized pegs.
No. He's right. This tuner doesn't fit: loose on some pegs, not even close on others. From looking at the star head, it appears that some of the points are rounded off while others aren't; this may be why the tuner fits on some pegs and not others, depending on their orientation.
The wooden handle was also split two inches back from the ferrule.
All around, this is not a well made tool and I would not recommend that you take a chance on it.
On the other hand, the merchant, WWBW, is outstanding and very helpful. Their handling of my complaint was above reproach. I will do business with them in the future.
UPDATE: I exchanged this tuner for a square-ended one. It works acceptably, but still slips some on a few of the pegs. I won't complain, however, since the square-end hammer does get the job done.

Oscar Schmidt OG10CENLH Folk Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Oscar Schmidt OG10CENLH Folk Acoustic Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

I had two major problems with this guitar. The photo that is pictured is a flame spruce top, one of the reasons I selected this guitar. What I recieved was a plain spruce top. The main reason I am not happy is that the tuner does not work , which I now know by hindsight, is a common problem with these guitars. Other than the obvious, the guitar does seem to be made well so I am exchanging it rather than asking for a refund. Maybe I will be surprised and everything will work as it should. Line 6 Pocket POD Review

Line 6 Pocket POD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This thing is great for practicing with head phones. The wide variety of sounds make for a more authentic practice session (so when you're playing U2 songs, you don't sound like ACDC and vice versa) and makes practicing more fun.
The only big downside is that it sucks down power like nobody's business. I bought four high-end AAA batteries and the Pod ate them in a about a week of playing for less than 2 hours a night. Furthermore, the manual states that only non-rechargeable batteries (or the optional AC adapter) should be used. I now plan to buy the Line 6 DC1, which is line 6's 9 volt adapter, from Amazon soon.
Another, much smaller downside is that the real manual is only available in PDF format from Line 6's web site. But if you're at Amazon, you probably have an internet connection.
While getting the manual, you should probably also download Vyzex, which is Line 6's software for editing the tones from the Pocket Pod. This software isn't absolutely necessary for using the Pocket pod, but it does make editing tones somewhat easier, and it also allows the use of download tones (which work somewhat like synthesizer patches.) I also think the software could be better designed.
Still, I'm very pleased with the product. When you consider it's cost versus the cost of an amp head, plus stomp boxes, etc., the variety of amps and effects modeled, and the fact that the Pocket Pod doesn't take up much space at all, it's a great deal, especially someone like me who practices in an apartment.

Yamaha GL1 Guitar Ukulele "Guitalele" Review

Yamaha GL1 Guitar Ukulele Guitalele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this thing. I tied a strap to it with some shoe strings, I slap it on my back, get on my bike. I take it with me when I go hiking, to school, to the beach, or anywhere really. The tuning on it is ADGCEA which would be equal to as if you had a capo on a regular guitar's 5th fret, which means that you can play the same chord shapes as a regular guitar, the notes will just be higher.
As far as quality goes, I'm pretty happy with it. Some people said the strings that they got were no good, but I've had mine for about 3 months now and I have no complaints. The strings are very sensitive though. They bend very easily, so sometimes the chords played sound good and other times they might sound a little off. I see as a very delicate instrument.. when I press down my fingers for chords I press them straight down and make sure I'm not bending them. A;so, because they bend easily, it can go out of tune pretty easily too. I tune mine often, to make sure they are good to go. I have always tuned my normal guitars by ear, however I find that it is harder to do with the guitarlele, so I use a tuner usually.
Visually I have no complaints, the wood and finish are nice, the neck has good action and feel, although a small part of me wishes that they had some artwork around the soundhole. As for sound quality, I love it.. the higher strings/notes do stand out more in a way, and definitely have the ukulele sound, but if you play gently enough it creates a nice balance. The resonance is beautiful. It has a very warm, mellow sound. It's pretty loud for it's size too. And it is so versatile, you can play Spanish style chords like Em and Am which sounds awesome (Onda Vaga uses a uke, perfect example, youtube them), .. you can emulate a mandolin to an extent.. I'm not saying it sounds exactly like a mandolin since it obviously can't replicate the resonant-sound of the double layered strings, but it does have the high notes from the strings that at least sound somewhat similar to a mandolin, if you want to cover a song with one. Or you can just play regular songs, normal chord shapes, even powerchords sound good.
It's just like guitar. Just tuned to much higher notes. If you know music theory, you can do a lot with this little guitar. I even have used a capo on mine and it sounds good, although when I put it too high up the fret spaces are so small it's hard to make the chord shapes ;-)
Before I saw the guitarlele I was looking at rogue instruments because they sell cheap mandolins and ukuleles. I checked out reviews of their instruments on youtube and they had some mixed reviews.. they didn't seem like very good quality. I saw someone mention the guitarlele on the comments, and when I looked it up I knew it was the 'travel' instrument I wanted. 100 bucks, for a completely unique Yamaha brand instrument? You can't go wrong. Yamaha aren't the super-high end guitars, but my bigger acoustic is a yamaha and I don't have any complaints about that one either (a friend gave it to me to replace my epiphone acoustic which I need to get a new saddle for).
I hope this review was helpful. If you get one, enjoy it. I know I enjoy mine. I've even started buying other travel instruments like a melodica and a Buffalo Drum.. so yeah. Enjoy!!

Oscar Schmidt by Washburn OU6 Tenor Size Ukulele Review

Oscar Schmidt by Washburn OU6 Tenor Size Ukulele
Average Reviews:

How much better can a Martin ukulele be? Don't know, but the sound and playability of the OU6 tenor is great; the quality of construction and finish is superb, the Aquila strings produce a sweet sound especially when plucked with the pads of your fingers, the Grover tuners add precision and ease to tuning, and, of course, the cost is within the reach of nonprofessional players. The OU6 arrived with the action well adjusted - only the strings had to be restrung to minimize slippage and thereby stabilize the tuning

Ping P2652 6-in-line Screwless Mount Geared 6-left/Chrome Electric Guitar Part Review

Ping P2652 6-in-line Screwless Mount Geared 6-left/Chrome Electric Guitar Part
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought these because I wanted to replace the touchy tuners in my Squier Affinity Series "Fat Strat" (SN CY08114648) that I bought 2010-March-24.
I have read online that Ping P2652 6-in-line tuners are a drop-in replacement for the stock, flaky ones in my guitar. Well these Pings definitely APPEAR to be better-made tuners, with better craftsmanship. They even have a neat Ping logo on the bottom of each tuner.
It is important to note that these tuners do not screw into the stock from the bottom, but are basically held in the headstock from the top by a nut and washer ("threaded hex bushing") and "anchor spurs" on the bottom. If that sounds like you, then keep reading because there is more to it than that.
Simply put: These Ping P2652 tuners have *2-pins each*, (aligned with the tuning peg itself) to keep the part from spinning around. These are the "sharp anchor spurs" from the description.
However my Squier Affinity has *1-pin* right in the middle of the stock tuners...
Since these will not fit I decided to write this review in hopes of saving someone else the same aggravation.
Before you order these, unscrew one of the existing tuners with a pair of pliers or maybe a socket wrench the next time you change strings. This is easy to do, just don't scratch your headstock. That way you can check and see how many "anchor spurs" you have before you shell out the $$.
For the record, I can probably get some nice tuners in this price range that would fit after a little work with a "Tapered Reamer" and some patience.
BTW, I have learned in the last few months that most aspiring "Strat" electric guitar players are probably better off getting a used Peavey Predator or even a new Squier Bullet (both are cheaper than the Affinity!) as a starter guitar unless they have small hands or the guitar is for a child. As an oversimplification, this is due to how close the strings are together on an Affinity - aka "nut width". Another concern is how thin the Affinity's body is. Generally an Affinity may not sound as good and it may have somewhat limited upgrade potential (pickups, etc) compared to a thicker guitar
Bullet and Predator guitars are closer to the size specifications of a "real" Fender Stratocaster, and many players who are far better than I say they sound better to boot!
Your best value might be the Squier by Fender Stop Dreaming, Start Playing Set: SE Special w/ Squier by Fender SP10 Amplifier, Brown Sunburst though.
That guitar is "full-sized", has 22 frets, a 3-ply pick guard and also comes with an amp, gig bag, stand, strap, picks, tuner.. the works!
Now I need to find out if I can return these brand-new tuners. Maybe I'll put this Squier on eBay...
UPDATE 2011-Jun-02: I was able to return the Ping tuners.
I ate the shipping cost but that is better than nothing!

EVH Eddie Van Halen D-Tuna Drop D Tuning System Review

EVH Eddie Van Halen D-Tuna Drop D Tuning System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It works as advertised IF you have a compatible guitar. I have a Dean Dime o Flame ML and because of the gap between the tremolo system and the body, the D Tuna wont fit properly once pulled out to the Drop D setting, it will be pressed against the body while slightly lifting your tremolo system. So it is likely it wont work on other Dean MLs or other guitars with similar tremolos (I think they're called "Locking" or "double locking", someone please correct me if I'm mistaken). I give it only 4 starts b/c I could not find out it didnt work with my favorite guitar until after I got the D-Tuna and spent the time installing it.
However, on different guitar, (this one has the tremolo and bridge slapped right on the body, instead of floating with a gap to the body) it works awesome! Going from standard E to Drop D in 1 second, and then back to E whenever you want, how is that not cool and convenient?!

Wittner MT50 Metronome Review

Wittner MT50 Metronome
Average Reviews:

Wittner MT50 Pocket Metronome
Flick the switch on the right side, and it starts instantly. Slide the switch up for blinking LED and sound, off is the middle position, and down is for LED only. Turn the center knob to select the desired tempo. Use the included ear plug to better hear the sound while making music. Takes one 9v battery. Includes built-in stand.
Pros:
- Will fit in many shirt pockets - is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Weighs only a few ounces, so there is no burden to carry it in your gig bag or instrument case.
- Takes no more than a couple of seconds to select a tempo of 40 to 208. Knurled knob is just right for sure control.
- Tuning note is a perfect A 440 according to my new Korg tuner.
- Clicking of beat sound is an OK volume when there's no music being played.
- Handy wire stand to hold unit in near-vertical position on a flat surface.
- Wearing ear-piece provides reasonably audible sound. I can hear it while playing my trumpet, for example.
Cons:
- The blinking LED is too faint to be of much use. Set it on your music stand while playing, and unless you have terrific peripheral vision or the unit is within inches of your sight line, you probably won't see the light. Other brands have much brighter LEDs.
- The beat sound, although OK, is not as loud as other pocket metronomes my fellow musicians use. It's OK for small group tempo setting, but insufficiently loud to demonstrate tempo to a large band.
- The ear-piece is useful while practicing on your own, but the volume could be a bit higher (and yes, my hearing is just fine). In any case, my antique wooden metronome with the swinging pendulum is much easier to follow, at least for me.
- Basic, no frills device. A volume and brightness control would have been a big help. There are no beat (4/4, 2/4, 3/4 etc., where beat 1 is louder) choices. It doesn't shut off by itself.
Summary:
I bought it mostly to set the tempo for small groups I'm in, before we start a piece. For that, it works fine. However, having a weak LED and so-so beat sound, are pretty basic weaknesses. I wouldn't buy this one again.

Average Reviews:

I received this as a gift (It was on my wish list). I've been trying to figure it out for a couple hours and I just don't think it works the way anyone would expect. First there is no Guitar Tab used. For a given song, the major chords and there fingering are listed, for example 'Am XO221O'. Then it's just lyrics with the chord names over the change points. So it's less like Tab and more like a lyric cheat sheet. The system is supposed to scroll in time, but several songs just do not work at all. Manually scrolling to see a preview of all the lyrics is very difficult to do as there isn't a smooth scroll but rather a few line jump every time you touch the scroll bar. You can load MP3s and even create your own tab files, but the sound output via built in speaker is very weak, and through the headphone output is not very good. Additional songs are averaging $0.44 for the tab files. You can load your own MP3s. I'm going to try a bit more, but be warned, if you're used to an iPhone or similar, and expect that this is going to be the musicians version with Guitar Tab, you'll be very disappointed.
